Front hub race

Postby meby » Mon Jan 09, 2012 3:27 pm

Short story long. I took the wheels off today to rotate the tires and check the front brake pads. The pads were almost gone, so I pulled it apart. After I got the caliper out, I spun the rotor to see what the bearings felt like and discovered that they were making a lot of noise. Once I got the hub & rotor off to see which one was bad and noticed the inner? (the one towards the motor) race appears to be out of place. The hub has the spot where the seal sits and then its stepped in. When the seal is in place, there is a roughly 3/16" space between it and the race. Here-in lays my question: the race should be in against the seal, not a 3/16" in, right? And if its not where its supposed to be, can I press it back in place or should I just replace the hub and the race to make sure that it doesn't happen again?

Thanks,
-Matt

P.S. Will have a picture up shortly.

Look hard at this image (typical) and you'll see there's suppose to be space there (inner wheel bearing):

The seal is pressed into the hub and up against the step in the first space in the hub.

Here, you can see the greased roller-bearing installed. Notice I've got grease loaded in that slot you're talking about.

Here, the seal is installed, you can see the gap just under the seal:

Yours looks just as it's suppose to be. :)

Thanks. I guess I never looked that close before. I never noticed the space.

the inner and outer race seats in the hub have a lip machined into them. just seat the race firmly against the lip. it does leave a gap on the inside.

Thanks. I figured it out this morning when I pressed the old races out and put in the new ones. :)
