need help with drw swap!

Postby p16.d4 » Sun Mar 04, 2012 10:43 am

I have a 1993 2wd d250 with a 5speed. I put on a flat bed and a huge amount of weight on the truck. And I still need to be able to haul and tow tons more. I need to find out what I can swap in to fix my overweight ailments. Are overweight springs my best option? Is really like the added stability with the duals. Any and all help would be much appreciated. Some people Dayton that since its a 2wd I could swap in most any dually rear axle. But I am having trouble finding any good info on 2wd see swaps

Rear just needs longer studs, front needs hubs. I have seen dually simulators put on front 3/4 ton wheels and not look bad.

Sounds like you need a bigger truck. A D250 isn't the beefiest thing. A D350 dually would be much better, heavier springs all around, larger wheel studs, rims rated for more weight, etc.

Find yourself a chevrolet 3500 hd with the blown 6.5 and stick your motor in it.

I swapped a d250 into a d350. It's not difficult. I had a pickup bed so I had to get a drw pickup axle to clear the inner wheelwells. Not sure if your axle is wide enough now to get the inside wheel far enough away from the spring. As for the front, I just slid the rotor/hub assembly off and slid the new rotor/hub complete with the dually adapter on. Both trucks used the same spindle and wheel bearings, so it's a simple swap up front.

That is not a good idea. The SRW wheel axles is almost 12" narrower than a dually axle. A C&C axle is 6" wider than a SRW axle. Trying to bolt a set of dual wheels on a SRW axle will make the truck a good yard ornamint. The inner duals will be locked solid to the spring packs, and the rims will be bent.

You will need a new rear axle, and dually hubs for the front. SHould be a fairly straight forward swap.

Errrrr, oooookaaaayyy.
By my measurements, a C&C DRW axle is the narrowest, then a SRW 3/4 ton axle, then a full bed dually axle.
I'm SERIOUSLY doubting that the wheels will lock to the springs if the SRW axle is converted using oversized studs.

When in doubt, whip the tape measure out.

I was thinking a SRW is 7 inches narrower than a dually.

Mark if you have a SRW axle mounted under a frame. Bolt a dually rim to it. I know for a fact that long before the nuts bottom out the rims will be locked into the springs.

Dodge measure rear axle width from backing plate mounting flange to flange. A SRW axle measures around 52". A C&C measures 55". A dually measures 60".

One of the previous idiots that had my truck had installed a SRW axle under it. Needless to say I was very mad when I found 1" of stacked up 5/8" washer behind the inner dual.

If you want pic's. I have a C&C axle under my truck. I also have a complete dually axle also.

One thing no one has mentioned. No matter what you do to increase towing weight. The DOT will always see that truck as a 250. The VIN is what DOT goes by.

Quite honestly, I've never actually tried to slip a dually wheeel on a 3/4.
Yes, thinking about it, that IS surprising for me.
I've just looked at the fact that on a 3/4 ton vs. a C&C axle, there is more tube sticking past the spring on a 3/4 ton.

Philip, you know me and these trucks well enough to know that I don't have ANY 1stgens with stock axles under them.
A 3/4 ton axle is nearly always THE 1st part I sell on these trucks, surprisingly.

HELL, I don't really have a "spare" DUALLY axle, either.

Yea you do move a lot of parts.

There is a lot of tube sticking out on the 250 axles. A 250 axle has a flat faced drum. A dually axle has a drum that the mounting face moves the drum inboard about 3". The backing plates are also different. The mounting flange point on a 250 axles is even with the brake shoe resting points. The dually backing plate is recessed towards the center section of the axle about 1" or so. The hubs are the same between the axles. Its the drums and backing plates you need to watch on interchange. If you use a 250 drum on a 350 backing plate you have about 2" of brake shoe not being covered by the brake drum. Seen this happen before when Case500D swaped back to drums from that EGR disk brake setup on his 250. He slaped a set of 250 drums back on his hubs. He had picked up a set of 350 dually backing plates. So a set of 350 drums cured the problem.

So Phillip, do you know how much wider a dually rear is than a SRW W250 D70 from mounting flange to mounting flange.

this explination you just gave explaines the 7 inch difference i get when goin from backing plate to backing plate.

is it really 12 inches, thats a huge difference
