Have any of you ever cut your front coils springs?

Postby Mopardragster » Mon Mar 26, 2012 6:37 pm

I am picking up my new front coil springs and shocks for my 91 D350 Wednesday. Right now the front is sitting pretty low as the springs are shot. Here's the thing though, I like the rake it has to it. It is perfect for when I hook up my 28 ft. Enclosed trailer behind it and it pulls awesome. What concerns me is the new springs are going to really shove the nose up higher than I may like. I am contemplating cutting either half a coil or a whole coil out of them before installing them. Have any of you ever did this or thought of doing this?

craig.backfire.ca/pages/autos/cutting-springs At your own risk man. Btw, factory spring rates are 875 lbs/inch, 7226 springs are 1100 lbs/inch, and 5716 springs are 1400 lbs/inch. (I think those are the numbers, pretty close to that anyway) I had 5716's on my previous 93 D250, and the rake was the opposite of my bagged out 90 D250, sat way higher on the front. The ride was almost as stiff as my W250, but they soaked up the big bumps nicely.

I wouldn't recommend it. By cutting your springs, you are effectively shortening the amount of coils. Springs are designed with the spring rate and coils in mind, so by cutting it, you are also changing your spring rate. Just save up and get some springs. You don't want to risk your live and others around you.

If you like the way it sits just change the shocks and drive it.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.
