Bilsteins are real good. Not really cheap, but the price is reasonable for what you get.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

I could't find anything while doing a quick search, but if you call them with the measurements from your old shocks (collapsed and extended lengths) they could probably find something that will work, if not, you could go with some Skyjackers or something like that, and they are on sale at 4wheel parts right now, about $35-$40 a piece...

I agree on the Ranchos. Bilsteins are monotubes, which is clearly superior technology (compared to the twin-tube Ranchos), but they add a certain amount of stiffness. Monotubes are great for racing applications but my truck already rides like a hay wagon. If I had it to do over I would buy the adjustable Ranchos and avoid the monotubes -- saving myself $$ as well. Another good shock is KYB (Kayaba); they make both monotubes and twin-tubes to fit a First Gen.

I agree with all of the above -- but be warned, the Bilsteins will stiffen your ride.

I didn't notice any stiffening with the Bilsteins.
In theory I looks like they could add some to the spring-rate, but I don't think they actually do.
Or not so much so it makes any difference.
My ride felt softer with them compared to my old skyjackers, but it's probably since they control the rebound better.
