Vacuum to Hydro boost brakes

Postby cumminsgirl » Sat Jul 21, 2012 8:49 am

Anyone converted their brakes from vacuum to hydro boost?
Mine has been a fail.
I got a complete hydro setup off a 2001 dodge 3500. Husband installed it and had custom hoses made to run the the power steering pump to the hydro unit and from there to the steering box. install complete now but there's an issue where when I hit the brakes it makes an awful noise inside the truck like the hydro isn't getting enough fluid to run it. and when he adds more fluid while running to full and shut it off the pump overflows. this is all new to us and not sure if he has something hooked up wrong or what. He tryed switching pressure hoses around and it still acts the same way. needing some advise what to look at now.

Are you sure its the hydro making the noise and not the pressure relief in the power steering pump?

When you hit the brakes you can feel the lines shaking

Sounds like something is dead heading the pressure. Can't get to where it is supposed to be.

Never messed with it on the 97 or 99 I had, so can't really help any. :/

Did you get the power steering pump from the 01 also? They have an extra port and some internal mods o handle the added stress of power brakes.

From DTR:

I have all the parts for this (I think) but due to umm, domestic priority re-shufflment, I've had to back burner it for a while. Be aware the P/S pump for the hydroboost has a higher relief pressure than the stock job. The pump reservior also has an additional return port, though you could T into the single return.

Thought it seems some others have used the stock PS pump...

We kept the stock pump because others say it can handle it. So to answer to your no we didn't change it

I am excited to say the brakes are no longer making awful noises. I guess it was due to air in the lines. Let's just say people are gonna need to buckle up till i adjust cause they are touchy! Lol hot damn :D

I just did this to my 89. I got the parts from my 99. All the lines bolted right up. It did take a while to bleed the air out, but not too bad. I had to get used to it as well. The truck stops way better than the 99 I'm guessing because it is lighter...

It took forever to bleed the lines on mine too. I was not prepared for how well they would work lol

I swapped my rear axle with disc brakes too so they work really well. I have had all the parts go flying off my seat many, many times. I just picked up a used hydroboost, lines and master cylinder for $75. I'm going to put the 99 back together and sell it as a whole truck. The bench seat is growing on me and I don't really need/have spares for the other parts.

I have one slight problem with my setup now. I opted to drill extra holes in the firewall instead of getting/making a new bracket. The firewall is not very strong where I drilled the extra holes. The setup moves when I hit the brake and is not facing straight. Where did you get or how did you make your bracket? Thanks!

Husband did this project so I asked lol. He says
I revamped the bracket that was on the power assisted brake to sit in place of three out of four holes I only had to drill out one hole and it landed just a lil higher then the last remaining bolt but still where the support was at.
