front end pull

Postby fbabo5 » Wed Oct 24, 2012 5:26 pm

anyone know of any possibilities that would cause my steering to pull to the right when i let go of the steering wheel? i know its not the caliper hanging up and the ball joints are good. i do have play in the gear box it seems because i have to turn the wheel to the left to compensate for the pull to the right. thanks for any help.

Cross the front two tires side to side and see if it pulls the other direction

The king pins maybe good but if you recently hit a bump at a good speed, chances are you could have busted the pin bushing.

In case your wondering, you'll be looking for a rotational drag between the two tires caused by one tires belts beginning to separate.

ive never done anything with king pins on it before. how do i check to see if they are good or not? i dont have much experience with working on axles.

ellis93 oh wow that definetly wouldnt be good. my tires have good tread on them but are kinda old so i guess thats a possibility.

I had this problem with my dodge a few years ago.
It pulled to the right all the time, but there was nothing wrong with the brakes
My problem was that I had a small amount of toe-out.
I had adjusted toe coarsely by sighting along the outside of the tire towards the rear tire,
but I didn't know that the rear axle has a narrower track width, so it gave me a slight toe-out

it takes a lot to break a kingpin bushing. IMO you would have tire or wheel damage to go along with the broken bushing

I did my kingpin bushings the other week. Tightened up steering a lot and stopped the brake pull to the right and bumpsteer for the most part. Both sides had the plastic split into multiple pieces. The moog replacements are about $25 a side and take about 30 mins to do both sides. Remove tires, king pin caps, pull out old bushing, then take a sharp flat blade screwdriver and stick it where the king pin bushing was, split the old rubber seal in the bottom (has a metal wire core) and work it out with a small screw driver. Insert new seal, bushing and install new cap. Its your option to scrape the old gasket off. I usually reuse the old one. Make sure the king pin bushing is keyed in with the knuckle. There is an indexing slot. You can do all of it with an impact wrench. The bolts are big and penetrating oil on the king pin bolts makes it easier. No need to remove the drag link from the axle steering arm. Also, make sure you loosen the 4 king pin cap bolts that are on each side evenly so you don't mess up the stamped cap on the passenger side. Loosen everything and tighten everything evenly.

So, you have 16 wheel nuts, 8 total king pin cap bolts/studs. All you need is an impact, a couple sockets, a jack, screwdriver, hammer and grease gun. I pump them with grease until it works past the new seal that you installed. Wipe off the grease boogers that squeezed out and throw the wheels on and you're in business!

Most of those old bushings have excessive wear or are broken up.
