Borgeson steering shaft

Postby 1992gen1_fan » Wed Dec 19, 2012 6:17 pm

Hello, I just bought a borgeson steering shaft for my truck. In the instructions it says to make a "flat" on the steering gear shaft for the set screw. I'm afraid if I do that I'll void the warranty on steering gear box that I installed just a couple month ago.

Do any of you put the set screw in the factory roll pin slot?

You should be fine with grinding a small ding in the splines. Better to do that than have it fall off ;) IIRC, there isn't enough engagement of the splines if you try and put the set set screw in the roll pin hole...

Just run the set screw down, then remove and drill a divot where the mark is. DO NOT drill through the input shaft on the gear box. It will leak really bad. Just enough for the tip of the screw to go into is enough.

Bad past experience, I take it?
A drill bit will go through that hard of steel?

Not me. I read a couple stories on rcc of this happening, as well as a local idiot doing it. I offered to help and he refused. I laughed when he started it and the ps fluid was pouring out!

Ok, I'll drill a spot 1/16-1/8" deep or so for the set screw. And I'll make sure not to drill through. Thanks for the replies. :D

I wouldn't even drill it that much.
Use the very tip of a drill bit to create a divit, more like how some folks make a countersunk hole.

OR take a sharp, over sized tipped punch and create the divit that way, then grind the edge of the divit smooth.
All it needs is a place that's low, for the set-screw to lock onto, nothing more.

Mark.

The best way to tighten a set screw is to tighten, then loosen, and tighten again. This makes a mark and then a bigger one so the set screw gets a good bite.

adding to the above, use the set screw to mark, drill your divot, set the screw, pull it out again and see how it marked your land area. you may want to hit it again if its not to your liking. Its best if the set screw seats 360deg around its tip..

I got installed the other day an forgot to reply

I did drill just a small divot, about 1/32" deep. After I looked at it 1/16 would be too deep. But anyway, thanks for the tips and comments. They were helpful.

I love how the truck steers! Much better :D

I personally run the ones with the rag joint. As long as the rag joint isn't worn out or ripped, it's plenty good enough.

Plus, then it'll be a bolt on deal.

I used the one that installs to the existing rag joint. It definitely got some of the slop out of the steering.
