Offroad suspension

Postby dustin_mud » Sat Dec 29, 2012 4:34 pm

Looking for a spring swap to give me about 4in of lift and maybe a little softer setup. My truck is a 91 I'm going to cut down to swb, wheel mostly on rocks and twisty trails. Any info would help, thank you.

Skyjacker SoftRide.

Larger tires with a bit lower PSI in them helps too.

Swap over to a coil spring front suspension. Will flex better and perform better off road.

Not looking to link it just yet, if I did that it would be with coil overs.

Sounds like a good idea :)
Leaf springs are not so bad, they can give you a lot of droop.

Do you intend to use in on the road much as well?
I run 56" and 64" in my Chevy and it flexes really well, and performs perfectly offroad.
But it's got pretty poor handling on the road, but I think that could be fixed with the addition of a panhard bar.
And if done correctly that doesn't have to limit flex much at all.

The 56" springs are overkill though, so stick to the 52" like you've planned.
The 56" springs also gives unnecessary issues with caster and drive shaft angle, due the the axle not being centered on the leaf.
If you're building a truggy I would consider going with 52" or 56" in the rear though, to be able to get a better departure angle.
But if you're going to use a regular bed, that won't be the limiting factor

I've been looking into doing this spring swap with my dodge as well,
but with out cutting of the tabs that limits droop, and with a shorter shackle.

You're going to have to move the front hanger 2" forward to keep the axle in it's stock location.
But I would consider moving it further forward for better tire to fender well clearance,
problem is you might have to lengthen the frame some for that, but I don't think it would be a big deal.

One more thing, crossover steering will be an absolute must, if you don't have it already.

Proof that leafs can flex: 8)

I did that same setup on my old 66'. Soft ride, good enough flex for any trail!!!! I even kept a set of 63" rears just incase I wanted to swap them into my w250. if your on a budget, leaf springs are the way to go.

Any thoughts on what size coilovers? 2.5s seem a little small, 3.0s?
