Steering issue

Postby NJDodge » Mon Feb 04, 2013 12:25 am

Ok. I have a 1990 W250. Dana 60f/60r. It's lifted 4 inches, and has a 3 inch steering lift block. I drove to my buddies house and had parked parallel on a hill. I got in the truck to leave, when I parked my steering wheel was perfectly straight and driving back the steering wheel was all cock eyed, but drove straight down the road. Yanked it quick to the right and now its straight again, but going around sharp turns, it'll get cocked in the direction I was turning. Now all my front end is tight, I'm wondering if maybe it could be the rag joint? I've read that some people have problems with these and I was going to convert to a U-joint type steering shaft. I've had people turn the wheel while its parked but I can't see anything slipping. Anyone ever had a problem with this? I'm going to check the steering wheel tomorrow.

Thanks,
Nick

Check the spring U-bolts I bet you have some loose or a spring center bolt sheared off.

Also check the spring hanger rivets. I had the same issue on my 91.

But could it be the rag joint?

It could be. Look at it close, it should look like a flat piece of rubber. If it looks all disintegrated or wadded up it's no good.
PS, don't drive it or you might kill somebody. ;)

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Thanks for the tip! I did look at the U-bolts, they were not as tight as they should be. Tightened em up, now my steering wheels stays in the same spot. Just need to redo the alignment now lol

Due to the fact your u bolts were loose....and your axle was sliding a little bit back and forth, you more than likely snapped the head off your center bolt.
