Towing capacity of what looks like a stock bumper?

Postby PIFFTS » Fri Mar 08, 2013 7:08 pm

I'm a little new here, so if this goes somewhere else, please let me know.

I have a 1990 2wd cummins, with what looks to be a stock bumper, but it looks like it's built pretty sturdy. Anyway, I do a lot of towing and I was wondering how much I can tow on the bumper?

By a lot of towing, I mean around 3k lbs every day, and occasionally up to around 6k.

there isn't a stamp on the bumper I can see to indicate weight, I can take a pic if needed to identify as stock or not.

I'll probably call the dealer in the morning to run the vin, but figured you guys might have a handle on the capacity.

I'd investigate a Reese hitch of some sort. There's a 99% chance you'll be fine, but that 1% can be pretty important. I've towed in the neighborhood of 20k on a drop bumper. Not smart, but it worked.

What's your location? I have a stock Reese hitch I'd give you for next to nothing.

Most stock rear bumpers are only rated for 5K.

Thanks for the replies guys, I'm in st Louis, so that probably wouldn't be worth the drive for the hitch, but I really appreciate the offer. I think the bumper will hold for the meantime, I did actually tow what I estimate to be around 6k the other day(didn't want to admit to it incase the capacity was 1k).

I will get a hitch sometime soon though, just so I can make tighter turns... Maybe a weight distribution hitch. Wish I had a gooseneck trailer.

Wish me luck until I get a new hitch.

Most stock step bumpers bumpers are only good for 500 tongue/5000 towed weight. Not to say they can't handle more, but that's the rating. Well exceeded 5k towed weight with mine a few times, with small grain wagons of corn.
