Postby Rusnak12 » Tue Apr 02, 2013 3:04 pm

cant find anything to remove my rear wheel nut to remove the drum on my 92 d350 drw. anyone know the size or a part # for a socket or tool to remove this nut so I can service my rear brakes? have a factory special tool # but was wondering if anyone knew any tips for this sorta thing without buying the factory tool...that is if they still make it/have one around?

It's a 2 -9/16 socket. Any NAPA or autoparts store should have one, and they aren't that expensive. I have done it with a chisel by wedging it in edgeways and turning the drum, but the socket is lots easier! ;)

Not a regular 2 9/16" socket either. Needs to have the more rounded corners on it. The OTC socket was something like $40-50.

Before I eventually got the right socket, I'd simply take a large, flat blade screwdriver and wedge it in between the hub interior, and the leading edge of one of the flats on the nut. Then spin the rotor with a large wrench.

Works good. :)

Me too, when I removed it.
But it's hard to get the proper pre-load for the wheel bearings when you re-assemble it,
so I would strongly suggest getting the correct tool for it.

But I couldn't find the correct tool over here, so I used the nuts from a Chevy front dana60 when I re-assembeled mine, cause I already had built a special socket for that earlier.
So that works as well, the threads are the same.

You all can say what you want but...I have NEVER preloaded ANY full floating axles bearings,I've always got them to zero lash and called them good. I've never had any come back on me either. ;)

I might have expressed myself poorly, I only meant that it's hard to follow the recommended procedure when tightening the nut, not that it needed a certain preload.
I wouldn't be surprised if the recommended procedure even gives you more than zero lash... :?:

That was a general statement, ive often seen people preload them and I guess it works out for them but I'm not one that will tempt fate by putting more stress on old surfaces.

well originally yes, I forgot to put discs..... but then I decided not to change it because, how many of us actually have rear brakes that work like they are supposed to ALL the time.
