Pinion angle 4-6" lift

Postby wjones » Mon Apr 08, 2013 10:51 am

If anyone happens to have a 4 or 6 inch lift and a protractor; can you take a pinion measurement for me?

i had a 6" rough country lift and used a 6 degree shim, never measured the actual pinion angle but i never had a problem with u-joints, the shim was about 1/2" to 5/8" thick in the back as i recall

You probably have the 8"'frame like my boss has. I'll take his magnetic angle finder after we swap his block around. His kit was a 6" skyjacker. It came with degree shims which we tossed because they broke. Then the blocks were sloped as well. We have them in there right now so that the pinion is raised up. Only problem it with the axle wrap it gets the u-joint talking. So we're going to rotate the blocks 180 degrees, and build/install a wfo concepts torque fork. There is minimal wrap, we just don't want any!

No worries old thread.
I was trying to find a happy medium between being able to steer and the front driveline angle. my new front springs are a little too long, so they would contact the frame. so i put a longer shackle in. the additional angle didnt help much; so i was trying to figure out what it should be with the lift kit since i didnt write it down when i did the lift initially. I ended up raising the tail of the trans a little (to reduce the angle at the top) and getting a tom wood drive shaft. i played with the wedges for a while until i was happy with how it steers and took a little off the drive line angle. i suppose the right way to do it is cut the ends off and clock the diff but im not that savvy so it is what it is.

Why not just put a crossover steering on it?

I have a crossover steering. While crossover solves alot of problems with bad steering geometry, it doesn't fix the effects of excessive caster. the kingpins want to be at the angle they were designed for, and the married transfer case doesnt give you much leeway when it comes to lifting so something has to give.
