D60/61 parts interchange

Postby matthewh » Mon Apr 22, 2013 7:40 pm

While I'm sure this has been asked before, I was unable to find the info I was looking for, so If I missed it, go ahead and beat me :D

I'm looking at a '91 W350 parts truck, no drivetrain, only rolling chassis. It has, I assume the Dana 61 front axle, since it has the external lockout hubs. It was originally a non I/c 5spd truck.

What parts can I swap around between a later , say 92 D60 internal lockout axle? If I wanted to make the D61 a srw, can I use swap the spindle and hubs, or is it more involved? Knuckle and outer axle shaft as well? Unknown as to what the parts truck has for ratios, just like to be able to swap stuff around to better suit my needs, or desires. Going to lok at it sat and decide if I wanna buy it.

Thanks

P.S. I assume the rear axle is different and I cant make it a srw, I have to swap the entire axle assembly?

It could be a 60 or 61, as 91's came with internal lockouts and either 60 or 61. The hubs may have been swapped or even the axle at some point. The majority of parts are interchangeable, no need to swap spindles, just hubs and lockouts. As for the rear axle, drw chassis cab, drw standard and SRW configurations have all different widths, so it depends on what you want to do, and what ratio you want to use...

I guess I'll have to check it out. Don't really need another truck, let alone a parts truck, but it has a good dually bed, and some sheetmetal as well. Really just want the frame for another project, but he made me a pkg offer that was very reasonable, so I figure I'll scrap the bad, sell the good and keep what I want/need.

did dodge put any gear ratios other than 3.07's into D61s? i thought they used 60's in everything but 3.07 rigs.

Not that I know of, 61's are specific to the 3.07's, and they are basically a modified 60, just casting and machining for the ring/pinion/carrier combo...

Dodge only supplied 61s with 3.07 gears, but they do make some other gears for them. Detroit even offered a locker for them. I guess they still do? D60 carriers/lockers can be used with a combination of thick ring gear, spacers/shims and a lot of measuring.

I ended up looking at the truck I was asking the axle q's about. Complete pile. Wasn't any good sheet metal on it, even though he claimed the bed was just minor dents and scratched .
I was mainly interested in the frame to swap out on my project truck. Somebody had cobbled a dump box on it at some point, and just welded random chucks of metal everywhere.
Axles ended up being D60/D70, but unknown ratios due to missing hood sticker and axle tags.
That truck was a good candidate for toasters

D60 4:10 and down carrier is the same as a D61 3:07 carrier.

D70 4:10 and down is the same crrier as a D71 3:07 carrier.

i was curious because of this comment

he says it was a nonIC 5spd, which means it had a 60 and 70, but you said it could have either. that's the only reason i asked

They sure did! My twin truck, an 89 W250 had a d61f and 3.54's, 5 speed truck. I have a part number somewhere of the carrier they used too..
