Does our suspension suck that much or is it just mine?

Postby 9312v » Tue May 14, 2013 3:21 pm

I know our trucks are atleast 20 years old but man they ride like poop.

A friend has a lifted PBS ford and his rides better than mine. Another friend has a 02 gmc with cranked torsion keys and his seems to ride close to mine. My roommate has a 02 super duty and thy rides better.
Is it just fatigue on our front suspension. Leaf springs are hard to mess up

I put a Kelderman single bag unit under the rear of my 92 and it made a big difference...

Put 2" or so gas 1/2 ton - 3/4 ton lift springs in it, and it'll ride night and day better. Won't haul anything bigger than 2 passengers though.

Biltit - did those Alcans make a difference? Or not much

The alcans definately made a difference. The small bumps i don't even feel them anymore, its the medium-big dips (and speed bumps) that still bounce the heck out of the truck. It seems after about 1-2" of travel the springs just have no movement left or they are too high a spring rate (by the butt-o-meter). I have some parabolic fronts i am planning on installing next week and probably going 63" long leafs in the rear sometime this summer. If i feel spendy next year i may try a coil setup in the front but i really don't want to spend that kind of cash.

I also noticed the seat is a big culprit of the bouncy ride (think trampoline or bouncy house), I temporarily installed a 40/20/40 setup out of an 06? chev and i liked it alot better. I just need some time to fab up the mount because it is somewhat involved due to integral seatbelts on the new seats.

"Brutal"

That would be a good way to describe the way my truck rides. The old man put some kind if heavy duty shock on it and he said its rode that way ever since. I doubt it ever rode much better before though.

I've also got a set of parabolic leaves and new, 56" Chevy tears I'm going to run on my RC. Hopefully they'll take the edge off. I don't expect it to ride like a car, but I do hope for it to act like it had a suspension.

Yup, brutal is a good one. I am at the teeter point, i love the truck but hate the ride. Women hate it because a bra just isn't enough to keep things where they should be lol. I laugh when i have my 11 yr old son with me, he bounces around on the seat alot more than my heavy arse does. Its comical for me.

Take a look under a 1960's Dodge 3/4T truck and you will see pretty much the same technology that Chrysler carried forward into our trucks.

Minus those had the shackle in the front of the front spring................. not a good idea when one's trying to keep an axle in a straight line.

I do believe that my negative spring arch isn't helping me at all and there's a good chance my shocks are factory, however there is no way these two thing solely are the solution.

I did send Bill at alcan a email asking him a few things so we'll wait and see about that.

What have you guys done to your front leaf packs? new factory pack, add-a-leaf, bastard pack with other springs?(details), or after market( alcan, skyjacker, ext)

The thought of a 4 link and coil overs has been kicking around for quite a while however it is not a viable solution IE cost and down time. However it would be sweet to have a bagged front with a 4 link that hooks.

One might consider:

- Raise the truck so the springs are in full droop.
- Thoroughly pressure-wash the springs.
- Allow to dry completely.
- Saturate the springs leafs with an aerosol type penetrating grease (not WD40).

Works wonders on a budget. ;)

The WORSE thing you can do for a better ride is to use Skyjacker springs.

It's a truck for crying out loud. If you want a Cadillac ride, buy a Cadillac. My 91 rides like a truck should ride, like the pride of a man.

I agree cougar. If you want a better ride out of your truck, the best way to do it is to use it for what it was designed to do....haul stuff! Throw two yards of fill dirt or compost in the back and compress those overload springs in the leaf pack. It will ride like a dream and smoother than a Cadillac.
