Slop in steering box

Postby RCCUMMINS89 » Sun May 19, 2013 9:25 am

Does anyone have the steps/procedures in adjusting the steering box?

I have a 10-2 movement in just my box alone. I've never done it, so I don't know what all can be adjusted before I toss the thing to the core box.

I've not worked on a dodge box but - Back when I worked VW's you could only adjust about 10* out of a box as they become "too tight at the edges". Meaning they bind past a half turn. The center of the worm gear wears more as that's where the steering wheel is most of the time.

10-2 is a lot of slop - I say junk it.

a few on here have mentioned loosening a jam nut and tightening the allen set screw in. don't tighten too far is all i've heard. jack up the front so you can turn without it running and just go in small increments.

i adjusted mine and it helped out alot, but i dont think mine had as much slop as yours. i just google dodge diesel steering gear adjustment and it brought up links to several sites with info on how to do it. very simple, but make sure you follow the directions. you can screw things up if not. i have heard several people say you should never adjust them. i too think if it has that much slop, then you should rebuild it or buy a new one

Complete waste of time on old boxes,it'll bind up. BTDT several times and it always leads to hard steering or memory steer. Buy a reman and be happy.

Yep........ I did some trial adjusting, and NOTHING changed.

When I feel like spending stupid amounts of money, I'll go with a Borgeson.
