exhaust idea

Postby gomerpile » Thu Nov 15, 2007 4:02 pm

if i take off my exsisting muffler and add, say a three inch cherry bomb(great sound and when it clogs with soot i have "legal" straight pipe)and instead of going over the axle (biggest pinch in the whole system) just dumping it out straight out of the muffler with a chrome tip. would this cause any problems, (who knew i would use a idea off of an izuzu straight frame) but will this cause over heating in rear diff or brakes, and then when i romp on the new injectors it will look like a smoke screen of the similiar.

My crew had leaky exhaust when I got it. It was real nice to crawl under the back of the truck to work on something and get covered in soot since everything under the rear of the truck was all sooty. I can imagine that this would do something similar. I say throw a 90 on it and dump it in front of the tire.

No, it won't hurt anything. Everything from there back will be sooty after a while, but you won't overheat anything.

I do not think you will like it. I am driving a Suburban with a 350. Exhaust ends right past the driver-side rear door. It goes kitty, 2ft of pipe, muffler, nothing. On cold mornings (like today!:pukel:) all the exhaust billows out either side. Really smelly

You're comparing cold gas smell with cold Diesel smell? Oh, for shame...

well with this setup do you think i will free up some HP's or even more important some MPG's until i get the money to get a 4in exhaust, or do i really need a bhaf to help out, on the massive air in/out?

I don't know how it is where you are, but where I am , its not about whether you have a muffler, glasspack, straight pipe etc... its about the noise level. I'd just go with a piece of pipe in place of the muffler and keep tha tailpipe. It dropped the egts on my last 93 enough. When I ran it without the tailpipe, it only took a few days for my nice white and red shock to dissapear.

well i did it and its a lot louder, but i like the deep throaty rumble. where i dumped it under the bed it has a resonance to it, so now it shakes the back glass, but really its nice. should i see a drop in EGT's with this , because i saw another pound of boost  and will this help gas milage, i really need every last MPG with diesel this price

That's kinda what I did, except for a section of 4" Cat dozer stack that puts it out in front of the rear wheel. It's a bit louder in the cab with the small Magnaflow 4" mufffler, but not objectionable. It's Waaaaay louder outside. Keeping the tip out well past the body seems to dampen much of the sound from being transmitted back inside the cab. A rather short, custom 4" exhaust with only one real 35deg. bend in it aft of the DP:
