New (reman) steering box, now steering sucks

Postby RCCUMMINS89 » Tue Oct 22, 2013 1:22 pm

So...........

New box installed and my steering is RETARDEDLY STIFF.

Was totally "normal" still with the old box, but now it straight up sucks.

Even though it seems bled, is that the issue? Or what?

Try backing the slack adjustment (of the box) off one full turn and see if it loosens up some.

Before I do that.......is there a proper bleeding procedure? I just filled it up and went lock to lock and refilled fluid. I did this about a dozen times. Fluid was foamy, let it set over night............fluid was ok. Drove about 500 miles since then, fluid level hasn't changed and is no longer foamy.

Correct, or no?

And to add, new box still has about 11-1 slop when the truck is not running. To me, that sucks.

I always jacked the front tires off the ground when bleeding, then held it on the stops for a second before going back the other way very slowly. I'd assume it's still got air in it until completely proven otherwise. :?

How you bled it usually is ok. Normally works for me.

You need to warranty that box if its got slack and is still sucky to turn.

Look inside the res while someone turns the wheel, you should see fluid moving.

Ok, I'll do that as soon as I have a turner.

What kind of "slop" are most getting out of their re man box? With the truck off it is pretty much right at 11-1. It's not of course that bad when one is driving down the road, but crap....it's not much better than my old box.

You may just be taking up slack in all the suspension with it just seating there. Springs, shackles and stuff give alittle on most everything. I'm not saying it ain't in the box, just that it may have some elsewhere.
If that box was actually remaned right then a turn or so in on the adjustment might tighten it up......then again you have the hard steer thing.

OK...........fluid is moving when the wheel is turned.

When I turn it a lot there are random bubbles forming. WTF

Double checked all the connections..........etc............ The fluid smells AWFUL like burnt plastic. Pump doesn't whine or anything, but the steering box is really hot when the truck is running.

I think it's time to warranty a box. It turns to the right normal, but when you turn to the left it wants to fight me.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Ditto, turd unit. It'll bomb your pump if you run it to long like that.
