Sway bar end link -unobtainable? alternative part/fix?

Postby monoblock » Fri Dec 06, 2013 11:42 am

My '93 needs new stabilizer bar end links. Both studs are busted off.
Other posts indicate the links are no longer available. Dealer/Geno's have nothing. Most searches just give the bushings which is the easy part ! "Repair kits" by Moog are just bushings.
The entire clamp+bracket+stud needs to be replaced. The 7/16" (?) stud+nut broke off. It is not like a regular heim end link. But I wonder if anyone has a kit/fix/hack to reattach the sway bar to the lower suspension? Perhaps a generic heim joint can be used somehow?
As these trucks age, this is a potentially important problem to solve .

I found a photo of the broken part:
http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=htt ... gQ9QEwCjgK
It is a simple clamp that goes around the bushing. A long stud is welded to the base of the clamp. This holds the simple say bar bushings with the usual cup washers and nut.
The design seems weak so the widespread breakage/missing sway bars.
There must be a part from the off-road/4wd/suspension lift kit world that would fit or could be adapted?

That's the kind I have too. Mine rotted off on the way beck from SOP. A hard vibration 3 hours from home just ruins the trip! Lucky I saw it and just pushed it away from the strut, temporary fix.
There is another style too, a member here gave me one. The clamp over the bushing is different, it's 2 halves, a bottom 1/2 moon that is welded to the stud and the upper 1/2 that bolts onto the bottom with 2 bolts. If you are a decent fabricator you could build the band part easy enough, just figure the width and how far you need to go up the sides, then bend it and weld it to the stud. Drill some holes to fasten the top and you're good to go.

Toombs,
You are amazing -you always have the answer to the really difficult stuff.
My idea is to modify a part that is readily available in the off-road parts bin. I have no idea where to start looking but will post any possibilities I find
THANK You!

Any better pics of one of these things? Are they the same setup between the D's and W's? 1/2 and 3/4 ton?

While hunting for the unobtainable stabilizer shaft link for the D250 I found this site that has some great clear color photos of parts for our 1st Gen trucks. Jims Autos. When the part is missing, a good photo of it is sometimes very useful:

He doesn't have a pic of the 2wd sway bar link. He shows the 4x4 though. I went thru the whole list, he has tons of stuff. I've looked on there before. His prices are so far out the dealer is cheap by comparison! The flaps between the inner fender and the frame? $119. Hood hinges, $279 a set. Other small things are stupidly priced too.

I found this old info on part numbers. I am unable to confirm if these are correct. It is the "link" that is the big issue. The other parts -bushings,nuts are generic/easy.
For those of you who would like to know the p/n #'s are as follows;

52006831 Link $25. 88

52001144 Bushing $9. 28

3879212 2 rubber bushings and nut $13. 42

Current price on the "link" 52006831 has risen to about $50 with shipping:
http://www.autopartsmopar.com/oem-part/ ... k/52006831
DODGE STABILIZER SHAFT LINK (52006831)
Sale Price: $38.89
List Price: $51.85
You Save: $12.96
Part Number : 52006831

At these prices I now understand why others either make their own or just ditch the sway bar entirely.

If you follow your link and choose "front suspension" parts, you can see a pic of it. That is the other style I was talking about, the 1/2 moon part is offset at an angle, I forgot that.
I found a pic of a correct one, don't mind the jibberish language. http://www.ebay.com.hk/itm/NOS-Genuine- ... gory=33592

Great, now the pic doesn't come up with the link for me. wtf?

Ohhhhhh, that bushing in the broken part pic goes around that rod that comes off the front of the a-arm and to the frame, right?

Then that piece clamps around it and goes down into the swaybar?

Taco, the bushing is on the strut rod, there should be a metal band going around the rubber bushing and welded to the vertical link you see under the bushing. The vertical link goes down to the sway bar.
