suspension

Postby RedneckCumminsLover » Tue Dec 10, 2013 8:32 am

ok I've reversed my shackles on my 1990 d250 Cummins and all it did was lower it a tiny bit im wanting to drop it a lot because its easier and no point lifting a 2wd
any ideas on how to lower it more without rewelding the leaf mounts on the bottom of the axle?? I've thought about flipping the leaf springs over but idk if that would even work?
any advice would be greatly appreciated :D

Do you still have the full leaf pack on it? If you don't haul much you can yank most of the leaves out of the pack. It'll drop it some and make it ride better, but you'll need to put a traction bar of some sort on it because it'll wrap the axle without even trying.

You could put your shackle back to how it was but with a longer shackle. This would lower it. Now remember for every inch you lower one end of your leaf, your only lowering your ride half that. So a 4" longer shackle (stock setup) would lower you 2". I also recommend removing a few leafs. I only run the top 3 in my lifted spring pack. Rides better.

I didn't even notice the shackle flip, how did that lower it? My shackle flip raised mine 3". :?

I was going to ask that same question because, unless it was already flipped and he flipped it back over there's no way it lowered it.

Relocating the springs to under the axle will drop the truck the diameter of the axle tube, plus the shackle drop. One thing to remember, when you start jacking with one end of the leaf springs... it may not seem like much, but you are changing the pinion angle. It only gets worse when you load something in the bed and mash on it... extremely hard on parts.

Putting the springs under the tube will also reduce axle wrap, because the axle (the rotational force, in this case), loses 4" or so of leverage on the springs. Food for thought.

If you flip the front spring shackle over it will lower it. The easiest thing to do is flip the rear axle on top of the springs. Mime has 4" lowering shackles and still sits a little to high for me.

It also drops the thickness of the springpacks and twice the height of the spring perch.

Can you please explain this, I don't understand...
The front springs on a D250 are coils aren't they?
And the rear springs doesn't have a front shackle afaik...

Yes the D series trucks have coils up front. The front spring hanger on the leaf is towards the bottom of the frame. The hanger is mounted so the sping is close to the bottom of the frame rail. If you flip that bracket over it moves the front of the spring 4" up toward the top of the frame lowering the rear of the truck.
