Does anyone actual have one of these trucks that stops good

Postby tim curran » Sun Feb 23, 2014 12:27 pm

I can't seem to keep my rear brakes in adjustment. I replaced everything a couple of years ago. The adjusters spin ok and the stops work so they can't back off. It's seems like I have to adjust my rear brakes once a month. This is a pain in the ass. I keep worping my front brakes :|

Nope, not me. And my brake booster has a leak, so sometimes I have no vacuum assist either.

Yes sir I do! Mine stops very well, and I haven't converted it to hydro boost yet. The only original components left are the booster, porportioning valve and front calipers. I rebuilt everything last year, keeping the rear brakes adjusted up, good rubber hoses and fresh brake fluid goes along way. It's the nature of the beast to keep the rear brakes adjusted of these things, I know there is a thread on here that goes in detail about the inner workings of rear brakes of these things and how to keep them working properly...gonna have to dig for it...

Mine stops on a dime these days. About a year ago I installed a rear disc kit from TSM and it works like you wouldn't believe! Best mod I've ever done.

I tried for a couple years to keep the rear drums in working order and finally just gave up altogether.

The only part of the brake system I've yet to finish on the whole rebuild of my 91 is the parking/E-brake system. I kind of need it, I've been using a chock block in the mean time. I would consider going to a disk conversion if I could have a parking/E-brake that would really hold the truck. I've looked at units that bolt to the driveline, but the largest unit that is bolt on uses 1350 u joints.....kinda would like something that uses 1410 joints....

Did you replace the self adjuster cables??

Did you replace the drums??

The brakes on my truck work good. I can smoke the dualls loaded if the need comes up.

Are you sure the adjusters aren't in backwards? It happens sometimes.

I don't think so cause to back them off I have to reach in with another screw driver to push in the locking lever. An old timer told me to back up and hit the brakes a bunch of times to keep them adjusted. It didn't seem to help. In the last 100k I've done rear brakes twice and front brakes three times. Front brakes always good but not the rear. :|

I F'ing hate drum brakes with a passion. It ranks right up there with carburetors in my book. A rear disc cnversion is on my to do list. I had a D60 in the rear of a ramcharger that i converted to disc. It was an auto so I didnt worry about the park brake. It used all chevy k20 stuff except for the brackets. I heard you could use 70s eldorado calipers and they were the same but with a park brake. If this junk will work on a dana 70 like it did on my 60, its gonna move to the top of my nice weather pile of work.

Did you turn the new drums??

I haven't found a set of new drums in a decade or so that weren't at least .015" out of round. The worst one I have found was .030".

If you didn't replace the adjuster cables. That might be some of the problem. Most of the time when I have compared on old cable to a new one. The old one is about a 1/4" longer. That extra 1/4" might not seem like much. It is enough for self adjusters to not work properly.

Try to start using your ebrake some. That's the way the slack adjuster is actuated the farthest, finger moves more. The brake shoes are spread with like a cam system, both spread at the top.

Phillip may be on to the whole issue tho with the length of cable there. There isn't about 3 or 4 hardware kits for those Bendix backing plates.

Out of the 3 1stgens I've owned, my W350 by far has the best. May be because the e-brake still works, but on slippery or wet roads, I have to be careful cause I can lock em up pretty easy

Drums out of round for sure, I'll replace my brakes again this summer and I'll check on the adjuster cables. Does any one have a good part number for these parts. I guess I'll try the dealer ship next. Seems like local parts stores only sell china sthi. Both sets of drums I have put on we're out of round. I hate starting of with junk.
