Atlas springs on the way

Postby RCCUMMINS89 » Mon Feb 24, 2014 9:56 pm

Like the title says... I'll keep folks updated (expected 3 weeks for delivery from today). I'm now a vendor for them, therefore I will put up my opinion on them when they are installed.

I've ran EVERY spring manufacturer that makes lift springs and in every random combination, so I do have a lot of experience with springs as a comparison. However, I have never ran a "custom" spring from a company that wasn't the "big" lift kit companies.

Anyone else have experience with Atlas springs?

Not sure... 2 things... I'm a vendor for Atlas, and I feel Atlas has a better salesman.

Reason I say that... Alcan kept saying to me "you have a lot of power, you need a very stiff spring". That's not something that I wanted to hear, may be true in some ways.... but not what I want. I don't feel that is what it has to have. The newer trucks don't have as stiff of suspension and just as much power?????????

I've only tried Alcan, they did'nt seem too "pushy". I just told them what I wanted and thats what they sent me. Curious about Atlas, I might look into them when I get around to working the rear leafs over :D

Alcan may or may not be a better spring.

But, when I got off the phone with Alcan.... I had that same feeling that I get when I used to get off the phone with so many diesel performance shops. And that went like this "I don't know why you would even waste your time with a ve. If you want a real Cummins or make any sort of power at all, you'll get something else".

Alcan pretty much (and mind you, it may have been that particular salesman on that day) said that "you have a 1st gen Cummins truck, and you are claiming a lot of hp/tq with it. You are never going to have a nice riding truck, because if you do, you will twist your axles out of it. You need to stick with a rougher spring in order to keep things where they belong. So let me sell you a $1500 lift kit that will ride not much better than what you have now."

I wasn't very happy when I got off the phone.... that's all. However, like I mentioned already.... I don't know if Atlas, or 'Alcan is better... OR if there is even a comparable difference.

I may not be impressed when I put them on... and I may be like "holy cow, what have I been missing".

Which is why I started this thread... I've been around my fair share of 1st gen springs... but no aftermarket springs.

I will keep an eye on this. With 1000lb in the back, mine rides nicer than my wife's 2wd Dakota, but my springs are flat in back, and 2" into negative arch in front. I need new ones, for sure.

I know right.... Nope, I need to call Monday... as I don't believe they have even been built yet. I was informed multiple times that they are slammed right now. Which this time of year, I totally understand.

Springs came in today.... May be able to get them on this weekend, may not.

Not sure yet on their thinking ( or if it was a mistake ).... but front springs measure 46", which make sense when off the vehicle. But rear springs measure 50.5".... :?

Important note that I never knew before..... Our springs are commonly called "48" x 2.5" " springs.... they are actually off from that a little.

Yesterday (my truck still on the rack, getting the Dana 80), I measured my front and rear stock springs. As they sit on the vehicle... front 47", rear 51". So the new springs are measuring right on the money for an off the vehicle spring.

I am(was) hoping to get them in by this weekend. This 80 swap is taking WAY too long. Doing the 80 swap right, meaning............cutting off and installing Dana 70 HD perches (4" tubed, but 2.5" wide, not 3"), re doing all of the brakes & e brake cables (needed ordered in), wheel bearings, axle seals, axle nuts (all needed ordered in), welding on new shock mounts, uh... u bolts, and new plates, etc.... And now, due to it being wider.... I need those homo Bushwhacker fender flares, and probably going to need to space the front wheels out 1.5" so it doesn't look quite so retarded. Mudflaps are a necessity now for sure. All in all, WAY more money than just rebuilding the darn 70 again.

Started tearing into the springs a little bit today..... noticed that they sent me the wrong front of the front bushings. I wish someone, at some point, in the entire universe.... would realize that 92 and 93 trucks received a 5/8" front spring bolt. I'll find out tomorrow on how they'll handle the mistake.
