Honestly, I almost think I'm having the trouble because I got the fancy one. It's got some kind of fancy plate that turns when the wheels go out of sync, keeps it from clacking when you're turning. I think that thing prevents it from letting the wheels get locked back until certain conditions are met.
Usually I just have to let the RPMs drop to an idle with the clutch still engaged, it'll pop real loud and both tires will start digging again.
Like I said though, this is when the fluid gets some miles on it. With fresh oil in it the thing is a monster. It doesn't unlock under any circumstance unless you're turning and coasting.
Also, I had to pull the carrier and ring gear to get the cross pin out of my 3.07 axle. Dunno if the lower gears will need that, but you may be pulling the carrier regardless. I just matched shims and caps when I pulled and assembled it, didn't seem to affect the lash any.
