locker recommendation

Postby ellis93 » Wed Mar 26, 2014 6:54 pm

Need good input from those that have one. I'm not really wanting to change carriers so I'd like to talk about drop in/slide in units. What do y'all think?

I think if you're willing to change your gear oil every oil change and keep it as thick as you can find, you may enjoy a lunchbox. I'm running the fancy lock-rite and as long as it's got fresh, thick oil in the diff it is amazing. Always locked, but I rarely notice it driving around. When you first get it it'll be nosing the truck around weird directions as one tire is pulling then the other one locks up or overtakes it, but after a while you just learn to drive around it.

Doesn't matter though, you let your grease get some miles on it and it's a total crapshoot whether the thing will even lockup. I tried to pull out of work tonight and spun one tire forever, even pedaling it almost down to an idle to let it grab. It did eventually pop together, just as I got straightened out on the asphalt.

In my honest opinion....... you have the torque of a Cummins.... don't waste your time on a lunchbox locker. You have the ability to set up a an axle... and there's really not that much difference between $400 and $700. Especially in the long run when the $700 one doesn't explode the first few times you give it hell in a mud hole... with a load.

Can't go wrong with Power-lok... Detroit True-trac is the best, but unfortunately they don't make one for the 70. You CAN actually make a hybrid, using 35 spline shafts though. I know a guy who has done it.

Levi I hate that your having bad luck from the lock right. I was just eyeing them......damn. Is there anything else out there?

Eric I'm just trying to to be simple as possible. I ain't all that good at setting up axles and would hate to make a howler out of a good rear diff just cause I get stuck on wet grass

I don't know how much work is involved but the factory limited slip (can't remember the name) that came in these trucks work pretty good, or atleast mine does. Just make sure to put the LS additive in it.

Factory came with power-lok.... good, quality limited slip. Detroit is the strongest, but they are noisy and crude. If I had a choice, I wouldn't run anything but the Detroit true-trac. It is IMO by far the best street limited slip... it literally searches due to the design of it.

Meh before I swap over carriers to get the LSD I want,I'll just get a whole rearend. Then again I could buy spacers for the front and swap over the rear to this disc brake 80 I have under that 2nd gen I have. Idk......it's like I'm making more work for myself here

Ok, maybe a lunch box locker is what you need..... let me know... as (wait for it) I'm a dealer for almost all of them too.

just weld the spiders........don't have to remove the carrier....cheap....effective.....increased tire wear.......hard to turn corners.....hard on parts.......fun...lol I don't see why you wouldn't

Hold the phone! You have a disc brake D80 and it isn't under your truck?

Are you feeling alright, son? Running a fever or something?

Nope no fever.....just don't need it. Hell I won't break what's there
Honestly I was waiting on a worthy project for it,like the rest of the trucks parts.

I reckon I'll just sit on this and ponder

Honestly, I almost think I'm having the trouble because I got the fancy one. It's got some kind of fancy plate that turns when the wheels go out of sync, keeps it from clacking when you're turning. I think that thing prevents it from letting the wheels get locked back until certain conditions are met.

Usually I just have to let the RPMs drop to an idle with the clutch still engaged, it'll pop real loud and both tires will start digging again.

Like I said though, this is when the fluid gets some miles on it. With fresh oil in it the thing is a monster. It doesn't unlock under any circumstance unless you're turning and coasting.

Also, I had to pull the carrier and ring gear to get the cross pin out of my 3.07 axle. Dunno if the lower gears will need that, but you may be pulling the carrier regardless. I just matched shims and caps when I pulled and assembled it, didn't seem to affect the lash any.
