Steering Column lock dis-mantle & interchangability –HEP ME

Postby crossy » Sun Apr 13, 2014 6:17 pm

The 89 CTD automatic truck I just bought is in need of a steering column. BUT FOR RIGHT NOW I JUST WANT TO GET IT UNLOCKED SO I CAN STEER IT.
I never stole cars so I am not familiar with WHAT LOCKS the steering on this year Dodge, usually a pin and or rod , but I need to know how to discombobulate(like that techy term?) the lock so I can steer it. I am not worried about starting it as of yet. So I don’t bust everything in it. I plan on a junkyard hunt later on for a list of many parts I need including the column . I know in 88 they went to stalk controls, but I think they changed to columns again in 91?. so am I limited to 88-90 on this WHOLE column replacement the way I see it? Thanx , Crossy.

If the column is good and upu just need a key call a locksmith. Its the cheapest and easiest thing to do. I've done this a handful of times.

I've drilled out the tumbler before...just be careful you don't break a bit in it.
92 D350 Cab and Chassis. Auto stock, wiring gremlins. 330k miles
92 W250 Ext cab rotted completely out. Auto, pump maxed, 215 ppump nozzles, Denny T2 pin.

Pull the steering wheel and remove a few parts. When you get to the flat plate with all the slots on the edge, push that down, remove the snap ring on the shaft and pull the plate. Put the steering wheel back and and WA LA! unlocked!

sure toombs, now you tell me. lol I drilled it. had to go all the way up to a 3/8 bit before everything released. I can get it to crank now by grabbing the top rod (left side of column)and pushing it forward. thanx, crossy
