Will a Bilstein work? -Steering Stabilizer/Dampener

Postby McGee7 » Sun Jun 29, 2014 12:43 pm

I have a 1991 w250 that needs a new steering stabilizer. I see that Bilstein doesnt make them for older trucks, so does anybody know if they have any that would work for my truck anyways? Would the Bilstein 5100 series work?

Will a 5100 shock work as a stabilizer? No, Bilsteins push up all the time as opposed to keeping things where they are.

I went with bds for my dual steering stabilizer setup, wasn't cheap though.

What do you plan on using for brackets?

No idea... BILTIT will hopefully chime in and let us know where he found the specs on the Bilstein stuff. That way we can look the thing up and see.

I didn't think they made a steering stabilizer. When i ordered my shocks the distributor said they didn't make one so either the stabilizer is new or the distributor lied to me.

Either way if you go to the link provided above and click on the "dowloads" icon it brings up part numbers for different trucks.

They don't show a stabilizer for anything older than a 3rd gen dodge. They don't show one for a K3500 or old ford (all had the same front axles).

Kinda SOL i think without having a some in your hands to measure up, might be worth a phone call to someone in Bilstein.

Steering stabilizers use the same pressure on compression and rebound whereas a shock uses different rates for rebound and compression. I just use monroe stabilizers. There should be a part number stamped on your old body if you still have it, most numbers can easily be cross refenced.
