Some people's kids

Postby RCCUMMINS89 » Mon Aug 04, 2014 6:18 pm

Some of you may have known that for the last 6 months I've been chasing a wobble/shimmy, like a death wobble, at 58-65mph. I switched to Toyo M/T and all was good, except over 70 it turned really bad.

Have gone through every single thing imaginable and about 5 different tire/suspension places, mechanics, and even myself couldn't find a single thing wrong (loose) on ANYTHING.

Finally, I decide to replace my wheel bearings.... just because I was about to drive the thing off the cliff. Didn't have time to do it myself, so I had one of the local axle guys do it.... He finishes it, I drive it around and the wobble has changed (interesting). I jack up the front of my truck and both wheels are  loose. I'm pissed, and like wtf. I torque them myself and realize things just aren't torqueing right... too tight, too fast, yet too much wobble.

To shorten the story up... dude put in the wrong races. Put in a race with a 25ish degree difference in face angle. It's getting fixed tomorrow morning.

Now the kicker.....the wrong races have been in for the last 60k miles. I think the bearings finally wore out enough that the wheels were wobbling from the poor bearing to race contact.

My truck has had the same goofy characteristics your describing. I've checked everything, and replaced bearings numerous times.

Looks like I might need to check the actual bearing to race contact as well. Smaller tires have helped me a bunch… but we all know you like your big tires. Lol

That's scary! You buy a bearing and expect the race and bearing to be a matched set. Wow. How did you notice it? Funny wear pattern when you looked at them?

So it's Jeffs fault?

He buys his stuff through his warehouse.... orders them separate. Ya know.. I need so and so race, and so and so bearing.

Put new stuff in today......and stuff still isn't seating right.... ended up swapping to some chevy hubs laying around... and things seem ok now. Won't know til tomorrow... fricken stupid.

I've got to put some miles on it today... I'll find out.

We are also putting front traction bars on it soon. They'll go from the correct core support back to the top plates on the axle... at an angle. My Atlas springs are soft enough that when I hit the brakes hard the thing is all over the road. I need to keep these axles where they belong.

So when you brake hard your get so much axle wrap, it messes with your caster???

Yes.... My rear springs were actually wraping so much that just letting out the clutch in 2nd, my steering wheel would shutter. That went away with rear traction bars.

If you've ever driven a vehicle with 4-6 degree front shims... how it grabs and steers.... yes, it acts exactly like that when I hit the brakes hard.

On a side note, it has seemed my wobble has gone away. It may not have, but so far it does seem like it has.

Drove it 200 miles yesterday, upwards of 80mph and all of my wobble has gone away.

Hooray. I hope it stays gone. I need traction bars on jaeger too. Trying to accelerate hard from low speed almost always results in the truck shuddering like a mofo

Mine also shakes at low speed, just when I start off then goes away. I have a 6" lift with 35's. maybe this is what I need?? My pinon seal in the rear leaks ow and the t-case seal. don't want to change them out till I figure out the problem.

Steering wheel jumps at low speed? I'd look at driveline issues first.
