1989 Dodge W100 4x4....Front wheel bearings/u-joints

Postby hokietiger » Wed Aug 06, 2014 8:21 pm

Hi gang,

My 25 yr old 1989 Dodge PowerRam W100 4x4 truck may need the front wheel bearings re-packed and overall re-lube....What would it sound like if the service is needed??
Any recommendations, techniques recommended for proper procedure??....What about the front axle U-Joints near each front hub??..Any recommendations for proper maintenance of the U-joints??

I do NOT have a Chrysler Service manual for that year model. However, a HAYNES manual can be purchased. Is it (HAYNES) worth it??

Thanks!!

Buy a factory service manual. Geno's garage has them on cd for $35. Haynes is better than a Chilton. But not by much.

If your wheel beings weren't serviced regular. It would get noisy and expensive.

Does that half truck have lockout hubs or full time front axle?

Sir, it has the AUTOMATIC LOCKING HUBS that are engaged when shifting into 4-wheel drive.....I had both DIFFERENTIALS serviced today and I changed the fluid in the TRANSFER CASE.....It now sounds like the Universal Joint Yoke near the transfer case is "popping" occassionally. It does have ONE grease nipple but difficult to get to....Wondering if the new fluid needs to settle good in both differentials??

Those auto lock hubs should come off like a regular locking hub. Then under them are the wheel bearing retainer nuts. I don't have a FSM that shows the auto locking hubs. Its been a long time sence I have worked on a set of those.

Never knew dodge 1/2tons had "auto" hubs like chevys and fords. Pretty sure if it has a silver cap where a lock out should be, its probably a drive flange. On the long tube of the front axle, it will have a center axle disconnect.

I am so new to this procedure...The HAYNES manual has a pretty good description but not enough pictures to depict the precise procedure of removing/repacking the bearings, seals, etc..... Troublemsome for me since I am so unfamiliar with the terms (nomenclature).

I did do the HORIZONTAL and VERTICAL "tug" on the front tires and very little play, if any, was detected. That tells me the bearings are still "tight".....Do you think it's OK to "keep on rolling" for awhile until I get a good Mopar Service Manual??

The truck has never been abused and as mentioned before, the 4X4 had never been used until I purchased the truck...I have changed the front and rear differential fluids and also the transfer case fluid.

Thanks for all help and if anybody has additional pictures, book clippings, etc. to share, it is GREATLY appreciated !!

The tugging would tell you if the ball-joints are bad. I'm assuming they had ball-joints in the Dana 44 front axle.
