Front tire tread wear

Postby 1992gen1_fan » Sat Aug 30, 2014 7:20 am

The front tires on my truck are wearing the outside tread heavily on both sides. Going to be looking at it and making necessary adjustments prety soon, thought I'd ask what I need to check out for this problem as I've lost some faith in my local alignment shop.

Last year I fixed alot of stuff on the front end including kingpins, hub bearings, tierod ends ect. so prety sure it probably just needs something adjusted.

Check your toe measurement, its the only real adjustment on a stock setup. No need for an alignment shop as you can do it yourself.

A picture may help us analyze too.

usually with that kind of wear its ball joints king pin related. Just to check, set front end on jack stands and use a prybar in the upward motion on the bottom of the tire and you will feel movement if its the problem.

King pins in his case, no ball joints.

I have found with kingpins the only true way is to pull apart and inspect them, the prybar trick doesn't always work with them.

Take the top caps off and inspect the nylon bushings at the least as it is easy to do.

Do you run larger than stock tires? Do you make hard, sharp turns? These two things can add wear to the outside of the tires along with having moderate to severe "toe in". I've run several different sizes of tires over the years on the CTD and gassers I have owned, and having a near perfect alignment can make tires last a very long time.

I'll double check the toe. Now I did rebuild the kingpins, replaced the lower bearings and the nylon tapered bushings in the top. The top pins themselves looked ok but the bushings were just worn and broke.

When I had the hubs appart, there were tapered rings between the inner and outer sections and looked like they could adjust "camber" I think?

The tires are slightly shorter than stock. Running 245 75 16's.

If the outside edge is where on BOTH tires, it's the toe. Too much toe in. Just one side is indicative of a bad king pin.

I don't know what the proper spec is for the toe set,but 1/2" (.50) is a lot. Most stuff runs around .20 or less (less than 1/4)

From what I've seen, looks like it should be close to zero so 1/16-1/8" should be good.

I adjusted the "toe in" to about 1/16". It does seem to steer a bit smoother when turning sharp in a parking lot ect. :D

My 93 was doing the same thing. Toe was out 1/2" on it too! What made it worse, was putting air in the Kelderman. The added caster just made it worse. The TREs were worn out, so replaced them and set the toe at 1/16". Front end is happy now. :)

Not unless the nylon bushing and spring are bad on both. BTDT!
