ford d80 drw

Postby 1992gen1_fan » Thu Nov 06, 2014 5:04 pm

A guy has a d80 in a 2001 f350 drw 7.3
I haven't looked at it real good yet but he said he'd sell it for a good price. Would it be hard to swap into my truck?

Not with a torch grinder and welder. Just move the spring perches, build some shock mounts and shorten the driveshaft.

Do some measuring... I'm not sure if the Fords and Dodges were the same. If it is the same as a Dodge.....

Dodge is 6" wider over all. 3" axle perches, compared to 2.5, shock mounts have to be re worked..... in the end it is worth it, Dana 70s can be weak. I blew up 2. And by no means am I tough on anything. I am, but I'm not. IN FACT the only 2 things that I have EVER broken, besides u joins on any vehicle, regardless of hp... Dana 70. I've never even broken a getrag.

Brian, are the Fords narrower/wider than the 2nd gen Dodges.

Ok , I'll probably find out what his idea of a "good deal" is pretty soon. If its reasonably I'll probably go ahead and buy it.

From Dually to dually I think the track widths are near identical the Ford might be an inch or two wider but I don't think it is enough to matter. Don't forget you will need Ford wheels too!

Sorry, I mean the spring distance (perch to perch). Cuz the 2nd gen Dodges are the same as a 1st gen. Or at least my 80 was exactly the same as my truck.... we just cut off the perches and used Dana 70HD (4" tube) perches to weld back on.

One thing I haven't checked yet is if its a cab/chassis. I do have a 2nd gen c/c d80 at my place and the perches are real close to the ones on my truck my truck. But not sure on the ford.

Yep it is different bolt pattern and I think hub centric instead of stud centric. As for spring perches I think the dodge is 4" wider than the Ford. 38"frame vs 34".

OK didn't think of that difference originally. I doubt it but anyone know if there are dodge hubs that would fit the ford axle? I'd like to have matching wheels all the way around. Me being the slightest bit ocd, miss matching rims on my truck might always bug me in the back of my mind.. Lol

Thought I'd update this, I ended up not buying the ford d80 because I believe it to be a cab/chassis and too narrow for my truck.

Also a 2nd gen Dodge cab/chassis drw D80 spring perches are the same measurement as a 1st gen pickup drw D70. I bought one and the perches line right up but I won't have enough tire-airbag clearance so it won't work since its too narrow. I have a line on a full width 2nd gen pickup D80 drw so I believe this is the rout I'll go as I put down a deposit and should pick it up this week.
