Rear Springs Upgrade? - Questions.

Postby justagoodolboy » Thu Jan 11, 2007 9:39 am

I have a D350, and the rear springs seem to not be as "arched" as I suppose they should be. Since I never witnessed one of these trucks off the lot new, the condition of my springs may be normal. I do know when I load my gooseneck heavy, It does seem to squat a pretty good bit, but does not feel unstable. I was curious what anyone had done to beef up or improve their rear springs. I was thinking a simple "add a leaf", but that seems a little too easy. I like to go overboard......

Does your truck have the helper springs or no?

You could find a truck with the factory helpers and put it on yours, that way you get the better load carrying capacity and balance when you are hooked to the trailer, but dont make it ride stiffer when it is not.

Did they have factory helper springs for us 3/4 ton people? Are they worth it for a 3/4 ton?

You could order overloads on a 250.

The overloads are nice because you have fewer leaves in the main pack, it makes for a smoother ride empty.

My pickup has new looking springs in the rear- arched a lot more than Mom's pickup with the same years and mileage. Rear springs will make a difference in ride quality, from my observations. They seem to have more, well, spring to them. If your truck has had heavy loads all its life, it may be time for a re-arch, or new aprings in general.

I was not aware you could get a spring "re-arched" so I started calling around locally with no luck. Is this something that is not very common? I even called some shops in Houston and they had never even heard of doing it......

Re-arching is a waste of money, a good springshop can gat you new packs and they will outlast and perform better than rearched old ones. The springs fatigue and thats why the settle, rearching them just fatigues them more and they settle right back again in notime like a year or so it will be back to what it is now.

I installed the Skyjacker softride springs both front and rear. The rear's have you remove the liftblock so there is a lot more travel. Ride is smoother then the 100K factory 1 tons, 2" lift in the front. Still not level front to back but closer.

I just went thru this on the GMC I had, it was as cheap to buy brand new springs compared to a re-arch that is sure to droop eventually.
