Rear brake drum/shoe sizes

Postby rollieD250 » Tue Jan 06, 2015 9:20 am

I am trying to replace the drums/shoes on my 92 D250 project truck, anyone know what ones i need? I keep seeing 11" or 12" wide

I need 2.5" wide i believe?

Even on rockauto i am really confused, advance/autozone/napa/rockauto part #'s would be sweet

Thanks alot guys!

If you have the stock Dana 70 rear axle, there 12x2.5 shoes. You can upgrade and run 12x3" shoes for better braking power, just look up a D350, as they run wider shoes

12" D/W250 drums, 3" wide (12"x3") D/W350 shoes.

If you had 2 1/2 shoes and you want to run threes like above, you have to cut the drums surfaces As well

Aren't the 12" drums the same or are the 2.5" only cut 2.5"? I figured all the 12" drums would already have 3" wide surfaces already...?

Same drums, wear surface will be worn in at whatever width the old shoe was tho. I'd not put wider shoes in a small shoes rut.

You should also upgrade your slave cylinders to the 1 ton as well. They are a 1.125" bore vs a 1" bore. GM used a 1.187" on the same axle, another option.
RIP 91.5 W250 5 speed. The great experiment.
