Power Steering Pump puking fluid when parked

Postby 762frmafr » Fri Jan 16, 2015 9:28 am

So a couple weeks ago, my power steering pump was whining. I topped it off with power steering fluid. It stopped whining. Now when I park it, it pukes fluid out of the cap, and is hard to turn at low speeds. Any ideas what it could be? I am thinking power steering pump, but want to make sure.

There's a sticking spool valve in the pump. It's located behind the pressure fitting in the pump....where the treasure line screws to.

So can i replace the valve only? Or do I need to replace the pump? Is it hard to get to?

Follow your pressure line to the back of the pump....you'll find it,easy.

Idk if you'll need to replace it or not..... Normally it happens when the fluid is really dirty or there's trash in the system. If the valve lands are scorn or its wedged tight in the bore, then yeah it's toast.
The stack up there is fitting (where the psi line hooks),valve and spring. I've had success pushing in the valve just enough to make it move and then try to push it in and out really fast till it pops out. When it's out I dry it off with some carb cleaner and buff the lands with some emery cloth,I'll strech the spring and install.

Ellis, I owe you some beers. Finally got around to trying your suggestion, and it worked perfectly. 5 minutes and some carb cleaner and it is back to one handed steering. THANK YOU!
