School me on kingpins....

Postby 762frmafr » Fri Feb 20, 2015 4:46 pm

So the front drivers side tire is wearing on the outside. I believe the kingpin is the culprit. I have been researching repair parts. I have found this kit from 4wdfactory.

Would that be everything I need to rebuild one side? Do the actual pins wear out? This is my daily driver and I would like to get everything I need ordered so I can do it all at once.

The pins can and do wear funny angles to them when the bushings begin to fail, so I would replace them. Only thing is those pins can be tough to get loose. When I did mine I bought a 7/8"(I think?) hex key socket for my old 3/4" drive Craftsman ratchet....Then used heat and a 10' cheater bar and they still would not come loose! I eventually had to cut around the base to relieve the torque between the pin and knuckle assembly. They spun out easily after that.

This is what it looked like.

Oh and yes that kit does one side. Pin, spring and bushing on the top, and lower bearing and seals and gaskets.

So that kit should be EVERYTHING I should need for one side?

Yup it appears to be a complete set for one side, will service both upper and lower joints. So you will need two sets.

Anyone ever put the bronze kingpin bushings in a street truck as opposed to the plastic ones that come in the rebuild kit?
