1989 w350 rear driveshaft problems

Postby 762frmafr » Tue Feb 24, 2015 3:50 pm

So the previous owner of my truck lost the rear driveshaft coming down a hill letting off the gas with a loaded gooseneck hooked to the flatbed at about 50 mph. He is a friend of mine and he said that he thought the rear springs being worn out was the problem. Well today, after replacing the rear springs, I was coming down a hill with a trailer full of wood on the bumper. I was on the brakes hard and went to accelerate up another hill and lost the rear driveshaft again. I was going slow so thankfully nothing or no one got hurt. So obviously it is not the rear springs that is causing this to happen. My questions are this.... my truck has what looks to be 4-6" lift blocks between the rear axle and the bottom of the spring pack. Is this stock and could this be causing this issue? Also, at ride height, the splines of the rear driveshaft are visible...by maybe 1/4". Do you think a long rear driveshaft would solve the problem? If so, can a driveshaft shop measure for the proper length needed? Thank you in advance for any and all info.

The clamp straps on the rear u-joint are most likely stretched from age. Replace them with Dana parts. The strap kits from the aftermarket sources are not any good..

A 1/4" of splines sticking out is nothing to worry about. You still have a couple of inches of splines engaged.

Also check that drive shaft to see if its bent.

Something else I forgot to add. The u-joint yokes have an ear made into them to stop the cap from coming out. Make sure both ears are on that rear axle yoke.
