Which front springs on D250

Postby Jelmer » Mon Mar 02, 2015 9:20 am

The front springs on our 93 D250 are sagged quite a bit so we are looking for replacements. Some say use the Moog 7226 but some say they give a harsh ride.
Also, is anyone familiar with Bilstein shocks? Now we have some (pretty new) Monroe's on the front but they hardly can handle the weight of the heavy Cummins once you hit a speed bump.

If your worried about ride quality then buy some spring spacers. They can be had on eBay. Other than that you'll be limited to the heavy coil springs and honestly it's a truck so a somewhat rough ride to me is tolerable.

I've never had an issue with the Monroe gas magnums (big yellow shock) slowing the spring oscillations. Then again a bunch of folks sure love the bilsteins.

I don't like the idea of sagged springs and spacers. I'm leaning towards the Moog springs and Bilsteins but Rockauto also lists AcDelco springs. What about these?

Idk about those. I do know the ones I have were supposed to be for 1000lbs over the original load rated springs. I bought them from JC Whitney about 8yrs ago and they've sagged pretty bad in the last couple of years.....they are still holding the truck up taller than others with the Moog springs. I believe they were rough country springs....something like that.

Once I go 1ton they'll see the spacers under them. The spacers are aluminum and probably stronger than the control arms.

I wrote some number down and came to the following:

Moog Heavy Duty: free height: 14.65 inch and springrate: 1144 lb/in
Moog Super Duty: free height: 15.09 inch and springrate: 1133 lb/in

Napa Heavy Duty: free height: 14.65 inch and springrate: 1066 lb/in
Napa Severe Duty: free height: 15.10 inch and springrate: 1134 lb/in

All 4 have a compressed height off 13.13 inch so I think the Napa Heavy Duty is the most comfortable spring since it has the lowest springrate.

I loved the way my 5716s handled and soaked up the big bumps. 1430 lbs/in. They have a slightly smaller inner diameter which I've heard rumoured causes excessive control arm wear or something of the like. I didn't have that truck long enough to get any long term results, worked great for the approximately 10,000 kms I put on it, I didn't notice any wear. It did have a little bit of positive camber right off the bat with the new springs, settled maybe a 1/4" after 10k. It would have levelled out eventually.

7226S springs will make your truck ride like a rock wagon, don't waste your money...
THEY PUT THEM ON A PLANE TO SOME STRANGE AND FOREIGN LAND, THEY SAID GOODBYE TO MOM AND DAD AND HELLO TO UNCLE SAM, THEY NEVER THOUGHT THE DAY WOULD COME WHEN THEY MIGHT HAVE TO KILL A MAN, THEY DID NOT SLEEP A WINK THAT NIGHT BUT THEY WON FOR UNCLE SAM
