A/C compressor clutch cycling after a full charge

Postby Crossy's son » Tue May 19, 2015 7:46 am

Hey guys, on my 90 D250 non i/c i vacuumed the ac last night with a robinair machine and charged with 2.5 lb and the ac comp cycles In and out rapidly. I disconnected the two wires from the switch on the side of the TXV valve and hooked them together And it still did it. If you turn the ac on it works for like 10 seconds then the clutch starts popping in and out every second . Its pretty fast. I need some advice what to check. Thanks

What's the pressures running? Could be you've overcharged it......that's what it sounds like.

R134a. Like i said i used a professional machine, not sthi out of a can. And on the rad support
It said 41oz so i converted that to pounds,2.562 . So i put 2.5 in it. I will have to get some pressure readings later

Your supposed to use 10% less 134 in a 12system. Also I find about 1 3/4 pounds does well in my truck. It's not an instant cool but in about 5 to 10 minutes it throws ice once it's there. Honestly watch your pressures. You should see 200 to 250 on the high side and about 30 to 35lbs on the low side at idle, outside temps from 80 to 95/100*.

Those pressures are idling with the compressor
Engaged or disengaged?

Good idea! It's only slightly illegal in all 50 states!

Jon, are you being serious? It was quite a while ago I took AC and got certified, but I thought no venting was allowed. Obviously a little gets out, but to blow a pound or 2 out is a lot.

Maybe it is when recycling the device (like small refrigerators) anything under 2lbs may not have to be reclaimed. Now you have me questioning my memory. One of the top HVAC techs in our area told me this. It has been a couple years.

That said, R134-A is being phased out. Dupont's patent is up and all of a sudden it is a bad refrigerant. The new stuff is around $150/lbs.

Being phased out? I have heard nothing of the kind in any automotive news litterateur I have read. Wouldn't that be a shocker to the automotive industry and its consumers.

I just googled that info.....it's somewhat true. The oblamo administration is in fact setting up epa regs to phase it out.....and get this there's no cost effective option even made yet to replace it. There is some junk out now that is in fact 10x more expensive (that is a quote) called 1234yf or some such schit.

They just can't stand leaving schit alone.
