f-350 brake line question--

Postby jethro » Sat May 30, 2015 10:49 pm

I guess this question would apply to dodge or ford brakes...
My f-350 was lifter before I got it. I think when they did the lift the front brake flex hoses wernt quite ling enough so
they swiveled the little brackets where the flex line mounts to the frame. Associated with this it appears that on the hard line
side of that bracket they bent the hard line about 1/8 inch behind the tube nut. The back of the nut has chewed through about half the thickness of the line back there. This hard line is pretty long and runs from that coupling at the flex line all the way up to the ABS manifold. Im betting that line would be major expensive from ford.
Is there any safety reason why I couldn't splice in a short segment using screw together fittings- thereby replacing the end where it screws into the flex line coupling ???????
The line is about .200 inches outside- in between sizes for a plumbing flare tool- so there must be a special sized
flare tool for brake lines (?)

Any thoughts ?

Or go buy a straight line from Napa and bend it yourself.

You can rent a brake flare tool from autozone. While you are there you can get various lengths of line with flares/nuts on both ends depending on how much you need to replace. Automotive brake lines are a double flare just fyi.

Yes- that was my first thought-
However I noticed that the far end if the line terminates into the ABS control manifold. That end of the line has a strange hex nut on the end that is about 3 inches long........ Whatever that is I would guess that would be needed........
Maybe I will hit some of my local junk yards and see if they have any........

You could cut the line and reuse that nut, then flare it. Most common size is 3/16" line but 1/4" is common on bigger trucks. Fwiw the lengths youll find at the parts store are 8, 12, 20, 30, 40, 51, or 60 inches. Sometimes a 72" can be had. Anything longer you should buy a roll to bend and flare yourself. Yes you can rent a flaring tool but it always seems the size you need is the most worn out and you get questionable flares half the time. Id consider buying one. And do yorself and your family a favor and do NOT use compression fittings on any brake line.

May I suggest you look into the NiCopp brake lines. There alittle more money compared to plain steel, but they bend nice, flare beautifully, even with the cheap DIY flare kits. I'd stay away from the coated lines, the seem to be harder material, and always flare like sthi for me. I use an OTC bubble/double flare kit.
