Newer Style drum over hubs?

Postby PToombs » Fri Jun 19, 2015 6:02 pm

Has anybody changed their rear hubs to the newer style where the drum comes off without pulling the axle or hub? I may have a setup available to me and wanted to know if anybody did it.
Need to know if I can just pull my hubs and put the newer ones on or will nothing line up?
TIA

Pete,

The newer drums are 13". First gen brakes are 12. The newer SRW brakes have "shorter" drums than the duallies, unlike the 1st gen. If you are thinking about swapping DRW hubs, drums, and backing plates I don't know if it will bolt on or not. Otherwise I know it will not work.

This was the rationale for buying a Dana 80 axle for my truck. I figured with the outboard drums I could do an annual "brake love" regime when I swapped on the studded snow tires. Been tripping over that axle for a few years now . . . but that is just me.

Thanks Alec. I pulled the drums from the '02 2500 donor truck to use on my '97, and discovered they are 12 inch diameter, 3.5 inch shoes and my '97 is 13 x 2.5. Swapping all that stuff to my '92 is too much work, because I think I'd have to change everything like you said. I gave up on that project, for now.

Drums on an 02? Thought they where all changed over to discs by mid 01 like mine.

Pretty sure it's an 02, might be an 01. I'll have to look when I get back over there to be sure.
