daina 60 front hub question....

Postby jethro » Mon Aug 24, 2015 10:22 pm

My ford has daina 60 parts.
When I overhauled the brakes and changed bearing cartridges ---- I noticed a tubular stem coming out
of the center of the central housing (which appears to contain the bearings and races)
It has a small rubber cap over the end. Is this a port to allow new grease to be forced into the cartridge ?
If now--- what the heck is it for ??????

Can you post up a pic, or FSM blow up diagram for reference?

It is vacuum nipple. On the fords when you shift in to 4wd, it puts vacuum to the hubs to automatically lock them in. Good idea, but usually doesn't work on these trucks since they are pretty old/not maintained. Since yours are capped off by a previous owner, I'm going to assume they are no longer functioning. If you want to check though, put a vacuum pump on that nipple and see if it holds vacuum.

I capped mine off and just manually lock the hubs in.

OHHHH- it must be a diagnostic port for checking if there is vacuum pressure (so to speak)

I believe the fords came in 2 flavors- the old fashioned ones where you had the small 4 position shifter which
mechanically shifts the transfer case-

and the more modernized version which had a shift-on-the-fly 4wd which I believe is the version which uses vacuum
in the hubs.

I can see that the vacuum seals wouldn't last too long without leaking. (weak design!)

Glad mine is manual activation !

Thanks, Tim

The nipple would have had a line from it to the chassis originally. You may want to check and make sure the feed lines at the frame are capped too or you would have vacuum leak with using the ESOF.
