Looks like I may end up taking a different direction than I originally planned, I might be swapping 2nd gen leaf springs as well. This means I won't be notching the perches like I would when using the 1st gen springs.

Also, I verified that the drive line does in fact need shortened by 2". There is (or atleast on my truck) about 1-3/4" of forward movement in the slip shaft from when the U-joint is mounted to the d70 yoke and then pushed forward as far as it will go. And being the U-joint will sit 2" forward with the d80, it probably won't even mount up without force.

I know this is an old post but I figured I would throw in my 2 cents. I had a great idea and a surplus of motivation on a nice day and decided to rebuild my brakes on my stock rear D70. I guess I must have not backed off the spindle nut. Needled to say I about lost a axle tire and brake drum on the highway while towing a horse. I ruined the spindle and it was not replaceable so I found a D80 with 3.55s at a small salvage yard where I broke down and got a tow in to town. A little grinding on the perches and some shorter U bolts and I bolted it right up. I couldn't use my original lift blocks so I was sitting much lower in the back like I was overloaded. I also couldn't hook up the driveshaft till I had it shortened 2 inches the next week, so I drove it home on the fronts. I ended up ordering a shackle flip kit from a guy on a ramcharger forum and before long I was riding level and more smooth. I am not sure if the 2nd gen 3 inch springs will fit in the factory rear shackle. If you are willing to go through the trouble of swapping shackles I would highly recommend a shackle flip. A cheap fix would be to grind notches in some second gen blocks to fit the 1st gen u bolts and springs but I have not done that before. The axle was a few inches wider than the front. I didn't measure but it was obvious.

I have to swap my axle out again next week. I'll try to post a pic of it. I think it looks pretty slick and I've never posted a pic before and I want an excuse to.

Yeah post a couple pics(shackles, whatever mods you did to get it to work)!!! Did you have axle cut down so tires don't stick out?

I burned and seized up the D80 last week and I picked up a D70 and swapped it out on the side of an interstate exit ramp 200 miles from home because I'm too cheap to pay for a tow. Right as I'm about to hook up the drive shaft I discovered the pinion was literally broke (lesson learned) so I got my money back and I kept the axle and have been driving on the fronts (again). The D70 is out of a 1999 so the width will be the same as the D80. Cutting down the axle would be like gold plating your bumper. If it mattered to me I would put spacers on the front D60 hubs to match the back.

you can see how far it sticks out. Its about 1 inch past the bedside. I never had a problem rubbing with some serious weight in back. This is the Dana 70 2nd gen axle just before I removed it and put in a Dana 71 from a 90 dodge. Another easey fix is to run wheels in back with a different offset to bring the tires in a few inches.
