Autozone Radiators

Postby bgilbert » Wed Dec 19, 2007 7:57 pm

Anyone have any experience with a new radiator from Autozone? Locally they look to be the cheapest compared to the other part stores. Funny how it's cheaper to upgrade to an IC'd crossflow radiator than buy a new nonIC'd radiator. This will be for my crew cab with a 90 radiator core support. Fabbing won't be an issue. The plan is to use an IC'd radiator and t-stat housing. I thought by now I'd come across another parts truck to rob the radiator from, but the time has come and looks like I'll be spending some bucks for one.

My buddy just bought one and it was fine. You're right though, they are the cheapest!

How much are they goin for? My rig almost never runs very warm, but I'm gonna need an innercooler if I actually want to tow anything with it. (which was half the reason I bought it)

You dont need to change it out if you go bigger. Im putting a 7.3 intercooler in my truck starting Saturday if the parts all get here.

Go to www.autozone.com or google NAPA or other part stores. Most of them have online stores so to speak where you punch in your year model make etc to find the price on parts. I think Autozone was about $280. I am gonna get the dimensions on the IC'd radiator, then do some digging to find some other applications radiator that is closest to it's size. Since I will have to do some fabbing to install the IC'd radiator I might be able to find a radiator cheaper from something else.

Ain't that the truth. I don't know how I'd get this crew cab project done without Matt.

I'm not worried about the fan shroud at the moment. Maybe down the road.

BTW, I measured the distance between the fan clutch (outermost point of the fan) and the edge of the non-intercooled radiator core support (90 model) and I've got 3". That said I can easily stuff the 2 1/4" intercooled radiator in.

My Autozone radiator arrived today. I can't say I'm impressed, but it's there. There are a couple very small dents in the core, nothing to worry about as long as it doesn't leak, but there were no rubber support boots  . They were in the pic on the website, but I'm sure they just figure the buyer will use his old ones  . I'll have to come up with four of them to mount the radiator   .

Performance Radiator has an ebay store, (I think) and had them for $207 + S&H. After the alignment fiasco, I am forbidden to buy parts through the g/f's shop.

I bought one of them from Perf Rad for my nonIC 91 after the fan ate the (intercooled) radiator just east of Terre Haute in 05 for ~$140 shipped, I think. I sold the truck, then sold the radiator.

You can run without the shroud. I dont know why people get so anal about having one, esp for a rig that never will tow more than 10K, if that.

Yeah I seen that place on epay. I prefer to deal with a local company where I can take the part in to the store in case of warranty work etc. I don't care too much for ebay anymore. AZ is $269.99 + tax.

The driveshaft will be done tomorrow and the crew should drive out of the garage under it's own power by then :D :D . I'm getting tired of looking at it LOL and got other projects to get to. Got an auto truck that has a D70 w/Detroit waiting to be installed, and a heavily fueled truck that has a s400 waiting 8) .
