replacement diff opinions ?

Postby jethro » Wed Oct 07, 2015 11:12 pm

Got my rear end apart. It seemed to have all the problems that the ford 10.5 seem to have (from what I have read)
With 180K miles I suspect the limited slip is long gone (and probably wasn't much good to start with)
Ring and pinion are pretty pitted. replacing.
been reading what the possibilities are for diffs.
Looks like powertrax no-slip is made for the 10.5 ls ( I think)
the other attractive one seems to be the eaton Detroit truetrac (limited slip with out clutch disks)
Either one seems to be better than the ford ls gutless oem unit.

Trutrac is about 500-600 $ - maybe smother operation than the powertrax ? Powertrax less $- sounds like it works well.

Any experiences / opinions. I will order in the next week or so. I dint think I want to worry with
the low performance and issues with clutch type ls units.

Thoughts ?

What ? no opinions ?

I have read at least 100 pages of reviews of people running all the main units.
I narrowed it down to 3. Detroit locker, Detroit truetrac, and one of the air lockers.
Ruled out the air unit as it was al most double the price---

decided on the true-trac at it sounds like it will do all most everything I need and not have the swerve-inducing
quirks on wet/slippery roads. and no popping.....

seems to be a reasonably strong unit generally. I will be spending lots of dough on the ring and pinion and bearings-
and the truetrac is the cheapest of the three.

Should give me a capable ring- I wont be doing intentional off road- just getting from a to b - maybe a gravely mountain
road possible if we move north. Appairently the Ford limited slip pack that was in there is next to useless and barely
works when new.... so good riddance !

I blew up two factory limited slip units. They just couldn't take the shock of speed shifting my NV4500.
Went to a Detroit Locker and haven't had an issue since.
