A interesting dilema

Postby GPW » Wed Jan 13, 2016 9:06 pm

Howdy. So after alot of looking around to replace the frame ( bent) on my 92 single cab LB CTD 4x4 I finally found a decent extended cab body and frame from a 1993 CTD only problem is its a 2wd....I currenty also have a 86' 4x4 gasser w250 frame but its the smaller 6" frame....
My dilema is do I keep the smaller weaker 86' frame and swap all my cummins and 1 ton stuff to that or do I do the extended cab 4x4 swap ? It looks pretty strait forward on doing the 4x4 swap as I have 2 4x4s to pull parts off of. I have never done a 4x4 swap on one of these truck frames before but it looks like the front spring perches can be removed by cutting the rivets out and then bolting them to the front of the 2wd frame and then the rear I would have to drill a hole in the frame for the rear spring mounts...

I'm leaning towards the extended cab 4x4 swap as it has the heavy frame ( i do haul heavy loads occasionally ) and the fact I just had a kid so the extended cab is what I'll need in the future.

I did do some forum searching and googling but maybe I'm not finding the right builds as all of what I have found seems like they went from 2wd to 4wd without much modifaction?

Excellent info there thrashingcows thank you! That should be pinned as the Dodge 2wd to SAS bible.
If I was to keep the good single cab frame that's already 4x4 ( 6") frame would it handle the diesel and extended cab or would I have to box the frame? I guess that's my only question after going through TCs build page. Just weighing my odds as the guy wants another 500$ for the complete frame and long bed that's 2wd. Both frames in question have less than 120k on them.
Desicions desicions.......
Do the 2wd to 4x4 and have a extended cab long bed ctd 4x4.
Or
Keep the single cab long bed 4x4 frame and swap the extended cab over to it and build a short flat bed or cut the bed down

In my opinion, it would be more work to do a cab swap than front end parts. Don't quote me on this, but I think an extended cab has to be modified on the rear to fit a regular cab frame. 500 bucks is a pretty good deal, especially if it still has the rearend. And you'd have a spare dash as well.

Thank you for the kind words...I try and help where/when i can. ;) :D

I would personally go with the ext cab, long box frame and cab. In the end you are left with a truck that has a lot more versatility then a shorty flat deck, or reg cab long box.
