With just a preliminary glance I noticed the drums on the D71 are placed much further out from the wheels than the 2nd gen axle drums. Are the drum brakes interchangeable? Are the 2nd gen drums any better? The reason I ask is a while back I replaced the original 1993 D70 with a 2nd gen dana 80 and the brakes were much better even though I rebuilt the brakes on the D70.

The brakes aren't interchangeable, as the 2nd gen drums are "outboard" vs 1st gen "inboard" brakes...outboards, you can pull the drum without pulling the hub, inboards, got to pull the hub. A good, tight set of 1st gen drums aren't too bad. Use the larger, 1 1/8" wheel cylinders along with the 3" wide shoes, and you'll be good to go ;)
