3.07 differential, limited slip front + rear

Postby dmerlin25 » Sat Apr 02, 2016 3:15 pm

I want to replace the original carriers in the axles I will be placing on my truck. There is so much conflicting info on the net about this. I can't find anybody who has done a write up or taken a picture or says that they have done it personally. I heard a guy did it or it should work isn't good enough for me. Is there anybody here who has done it or can prove what can be done? As far as I can tell, nobody has ever typed "Dana 61 limited slip" before on the internet. I hope this isn't redundant and I missed it somewhere on here.

As far as I know, the carriers are interchangeable for the 60/61 in 4.56 and down applications...

Levi has the info you are needing in his build thread. There is a bunch of crap you will have to sort through but it's in there. There is no special carrier for the 3.07 gears.

Thank you, I found it. That search feature leaves a little to be desired.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

I didn't want to bash it too much. I figured somebody put alot of effort in putting this site together. But they probably fell asleep on the job doing this electronical computer stuff when the search button was created on the 6th day.

The search feature sucks giant balls on here. The Google custom search is a little better.

I wouldn't recommend a L/S in the front axle. That is very hard on u-joints. If any thing I would put a ARB air locker in. It is selectable.

To give yourself a test. Just lock your front axle in and drive on hard pavement. Then try to make a turn. Then tell yourself that will happen every time you have that front locked in. Slippery or ice doesn't matter.

4;10 is the break on Dana axle gearing. A 61/71 axle use the same carrier as the 60/70's. Just make sure to match the spline count on the axle shafts to the L/S side gears.

Are all posi's the same when it comes to driveability in the front? I am pretty well convinced I want posi in the front for hunting in the mountains towing horses on snow covered roads with steep inclines.

I have never seen the need for a front L/S. I have been in snow deep enough and loaded where I bent the front axle housing. With a 1,000 pounds of Cummins over the front axle traction is not a problem. Bending and breaking parts is.

Remember L/S in a front axle will act like a back axle with L/S. It will follow any incline in the event of wheel spin. A non L/S axle doesn't.

Another off the wall question for you. Tomorrow I'm gonna replace my broken 2000 D70 rear with a 1990 D71. With just a preliminary glance I noticed the drums on the D71 are placed much further out from the wheels than the 2nd gen axle drums. Are the drum brakes interchangeable? Are the 2nd gen drums any better? The reason I ask is a while back I replaced the original 1993 D70 with a 2nd gen dana 80 and the brakes were much better even though I rebuilt the brakes on the D70.

I can't tell you on interchange to that later axle. The easiest way to tell. Measure the distance from the end of the spindle to the backing plate mounting flange. If it is the same distance and the bolt pattern is the same. I bet everything bolts over.

I know the disk brake mounting flange is different from the drum brake. The bolt hole spacing is different.
