Tighten up the Steering Box

Postby b4autodark » Sun Apr 17, 2016 2:54 pm

Anybody know of any certain procedure or factory torque specs or any other tips to tighten the steering up? I've already turned the allen head bolt with the
5/8ths in nyloc lock nut on it until I met a little resistance, maybe 1 1/2 turns and locked it back down.

Thanks

If you had to tighten it up that much. Start looking for another box. That ones is about gone.

I think you are correct, just got back from a test run, didn't seem to be any difference.

Any recomondations where to go from here as far as suppliers go?

Thanks

Many people get a Readhead steering box. I bought a E-bay reman box about 5+ years ago, and it has been virtually trouble free ever since....(Knock on wood);) Only had to change the input shaft seals a couple years ago...that's it!

I just put a redhead box in, and man what a difference! I should have done this a long time ago. I had become accrustomed to the sloppy steering over the years, but I was starting to notice it was getting worse. A mechanic buddy was riding with me, and couldn't believe how much I was sawing the wheel back and forth in order to go (mostly) straight. I ordered the parts shortly thereafter. I am very pleased with the results.

I believe the procedure is similar for pretty much any Saginaw style steering box. Even though this TSB says otherwise, bearing preload should be adjusted before you mess with that allen head screw. Dodge only says other way because they had to pay for the warranty work

This thread reminds me of when I had a leaky, loose steering box and ended up replacing it three times.
First Autozone rebuild I installed didn't let the steering wheel come back to center.
Second Autozone rebuild only allowed the steering wheel to come back to center coming out of a left turn, it would stick turning right all day.
Third Autozone rebuild worked and is still in the truck.

Were my problems because I didn't know how to adjust the box, or was I doing something else wrong?
