Shoes, wheel cylinders

Postby spencerdiesel » Wed Jun 22, 2016 7:35 pm

So I began the process of installing new pads/shoes today. The origonal intention was to put new axle seals in and pad slap the thing........but I ran into a lot of issues.

I found out I need new drums. This being said, I found the drums identical to mine on Napa's site, but when the guy showed me all of what they had there were none like mine? I've got the big/bulky drum (factory?) with a taper-down on the wheel side. All the drums for the Dana 70 the guy showed me were flat/had no taper. I'd imagine the taper is there only to house the inner/outer bearings/seals etc?

Wheel cyl on one side is done, so I got 2 of the 7/8''. I do know the 250 has a 7/8'' wheel cyl and the 1 ton has the 1''. I heard there is a 1 1/8'' too. Will either of the bigger cyl work as a straight replacement?

Finally, Being on a budget I got the $9 SKF bearings instead of the $24 bearings (inner/outer x2)....... Are they decent or was it a mistake?

Thanks everyone

I would use the 1" or 1 1\8th wheel cyl. When I went to Oreilly's only the 1" had a lifetime guarantee so I opted for the 1" As for the drums it sounds like the ones he showed you are for outboard drums on the newer 70s. you need inboard drums. the inner and outer bearings are in the hub assy. not the drum. Knock your studs out (use a nut run it down almost flush and pound them out then pound them back in or use a nut and tighten them up.) The SKF bearings will be alright. I've ran the SKF seals with out a problem, That being said if the bearings and races have no marks and look good still I wouldn't replace them, clean them up and reuse them, some pack them before install and some don't, but if you don't I oil them before install and then make sure you jack each side up to fill the hubs back up.

Thanks man! So the 1" or 1 1/8" cyl would bolt straight in?

The axle nut (or whatever the 2 9/16" nut is) has been ate on the back side. I think it's spinning on the outer bearing? Would that be a specialty part?

I've got a lot of wear in the 70, I got the thicker 85-140 oil. Is that too thick?

Yes. I am running 1 1/8" cylinders in my 91.

Yes and no. The original nylon insert lock nut with metal wedge can be swapped out for a set of front nut's (inner nut, lock ring, and outer nut), as they share the same size spindle thread count. The original nuts are supposed to be a one time use only part, but a lot of people have re-used them before, myself included. I do know of an individual that re-used his and the lock tab fell out, the nut backed off and the whole hub/drum and dual tires almost fell off.

As for your drums, you need NAPA PN: ND 4401417. They list them as for a DRW application, but the drums are correct. Just bought a pair a month ago for my pile.

After you get the new drums installed on the hubs go back to NAPA and have them turned true. Every drum I have replaced over the years has been out of round.

Replace all the brake self adjuster parts.
