Stupid question on gas 84 truck

Postby 888 » Thu Aug 04, 2016 1:05 pm

Okay, I have an 84 shortbed gas truck with the 4 speed manual and the 225 slant 6. I picked it up in a package deal with a parts truck, thinking I would make something out of it. I've only owned Cummins trucks in the 89 to 93 range till now.

I have a few questions about the 84....
1. Theoretically, it's supposed to be a D100 and that's what's on the badges but almost everyplace I look that has a menu to select parts only lists a D150 when it for 1984. I haven't checked the title but I didn't think Dodge made the D150 till later, maybe 86 or 87? Not that it matters, I'm just curious.
2. I want to put some Mopar dog dish hub caps on the 84, so I kept a set from the 91 D-150 I parted out but they are way too big. A little searching tells me the bolt pattern changed on the 15" wheel from 5 x 4.5" in 1984 to 5 x 5" in 1985 so that makes sense. I can't find anything on the web to tell me what factory dog dishes came on this truck (maybe those with the small black circles on the other diameter?) or which/any of the old school dog dishes will fit that 5 x 4.5" wheel.

It appears that most of the full size cars had the 5 x 4.5" wheel but anything smaller had a 5 x 4" so the "red circle" 70's caps probably won't fit? That's what I'd like to put on there.

I'm sure somebody on here has a little gas truck from that same era and knows what fits, a little help here?

I just learned via LMC that the previously nice chrome front bumper that got twisted in transit is an 83 to 85 only, grrr. So the wheels changed bolt pattern in 1985 but the bumper carried on for a year. Hopefully hub caps are a little easier to cross over.

Thanks

Joe

I believe the D150 and the D100 badging had to do with load capacity? Not 100% but I believe that's what I've read. As for the wheels, it gets a little complicated because dodge was weird on their wheels. Full size cars and trucks from mid 80s (you said 84 was the last year for the 5x4.5 which I'll believe you on that) had 5x4.5 the smaller cars depending on the option had 5x4 or 5x4.5. Some Abodies had the "big" bolt pattern, mainly the 8 3\4 rears with disc brakes up front had the big bolt. Also I did find out that some of the 70s dodge full time 4x4 trucks had the 8 3\4 rear with the 5x5 bolt pattern also. as far as the dog dish goes I believe the red ring dishes will fit a 5x4.5 wheel, as they came on a lot of cars and trucks. You shouldn't have a problem finding dishes for it. I do have a set of dog dishes with the little holes and I can see which wheels they will fit as I have 5x4, 5x4.5 cop car wheels and 5x5 wheels just to make sure for you.

Thanks for the response. I went by a few different references on the web to come up with the light duty truck change date for 5 x 4.5 to 5 x 5 and 1985 seems to be the general consensus on when it changed. You could well be right about the D100 and the D150, this shortbed is as light duty as they get....crank windows. no engine gauges, and a Ramcharger type rear bumper instead of a step bumper. I'm surprised it has chrome bumpers.

I figured it wasn't a hard and fast rule on the smaller cars and the 5 x 4, thinking some of them would have rear end or engine options that made a 5 x 4.5 wheel necessary but it's hard to tell. So those are little holes on the perimeter of those caps instead of painted dots? Interesting, I did not know that. As mentioned, I usually deal with the Cummins trucks and I only know the caps that go on the 16" wheels for the SRW D-250, they are a larger version of what I got off of the 91 D150 for the 5 x 5 15" wheel.

If you find a cap that hits the 15" 5 x 4.5 wheel, would you mind giving me a measurement on opening/inner diameter so I have something to go by when buying a set? It may be that Dodge made some of these caps in 14 and 15" versions and knowing the open diameter that hits over the wheel hub would be great.

Dodge IS weird sometimes, sometimes on the Cummins trucks it seems like they used whatever was laying around to build them up.

Another stupid question....the 84 is a base model with the slant 6 and came without gauges for temp and oil pressure, which makes me a little nervous. Back in the day, I had a Chevy Vega wagon that had idiot lights and it politely informed me via a red TEMP light that the engine was too hot right after it seized up on I 75 in traffic.

Anyway, I picked up a cluster with gauges from the yard from another truck from that same era and bought the sending units for gauges versus lights. It looks like the thread diameter may be a little different between the two on one of the units but I can probably find an adapter to deal with that. Then I started thinking maybe the ECU or wiring or something else may need to change to make this work. I don't have a FSM do I can't tell about the wiring but maybe I can find that on the web.

Has anyone changed over an idiot light cluster to gauges and know this offhand? I had no problems finding gauge sending units so Dodge must have made the slant 6 trucks both ways.

Thanks

The senders were probably the same no matter what engine was in the truck. It would seem to me that it only depended on gauge or idiot light.

Those hubcaps with the holes in them? I call those police hubcaps. I only ever saw them on police cars, or ex-police cars. Maybe taxis too, but I'm not sure on htat.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Upon further review, this should be in non diesel.

Sorry about that, please move if necessary.

Oddly enough, the senders appear to be different between gauge and idiot light. Well, i have a set of each now so I'm covered, and they weren't expensive.

Police cars and taxis make sense for the caps.....those are the heavy duty versions of cars so they usually have the same wheels as a light duty truck.

I just found a decent set of those "holy" caps on eBay for $57 so hopefully I'm set for those.

That's what I meant, what engine they go in doesn't matter.
