dana 60 1 ton Gearing Question

Postby Dodge Dually Nut » Wed Sep 28, 2016 10:49 am

I currently have a 91.5 350 2 wheel drive diesel 3 speed automatic. The auto is out and a 5 speed with t-case is in almost hooked up. My dana 70 dually rear end has the 3:07 highway gear. When I get to doing the front end 4x4 conversion is it possible to match the 3:07 in the front? I'm about to leave on a trip to Florida and based on everything I've read I expect to get some good mileage with the 5 speed and the 3:07. Assuming I'm happy with this match why would I want to give it up when the 4x4 conversion gets done? Are there any 1 ton 3:07 dana 60's out there?

There are a few D61F's floating around, as that's what you'll need, not a regular D60F. The center sections were cast specifically for the required offset of the massive pinion. DRW variants of the 61 are harder to find than the SRW versions, but the adapters are floating around to convert a SWR 61 into a DRW unit. If you can live without the 3.07's, then the D60F you already have would work well, and match it with a very common D80 DRW ;)

would the knuckles and hubs from the 60 fit? worst case could you split the stub shafts at the ujoints and run the outer stubs on the 61 inner axles? Just wondering

All of it is interchangeable, including all shafts.

So if I get this right if I give up on the 3:07 I could take the front axle from my 92 250 and change it to the wider stance of the 1 ton? I've not looked that close to how its all put together yet so excuse my temporary ignorance.

Are the parts to convert easy or hard to find? How Much? Also if the 3:07 gear in the front makes it into a D61. Does the same thing happen for the rear? I have two D70 3:07 rear ends one is a out of a 250 and the other is a Dually. So are they D71's? The Dually?

Parts aren't to hard to find, almost everything is interchangeable (bearings, shafts, carrier, etc), its just the ring gear and pinion that are the big difference. THe 61 is actually cast into it, but the rears are still D70's (some folks call 3.07's in the rear a 71, but this is technically incorrect), but...there is a tell tale sign that it has 3.07's in it. If you are looking at the diff cover, to the right side on the housing itself, there are two raised areas or "ears", one on top, and one on the bottom.

Image

You can see the raised area on the bottom of the diff, kind of sticks out there on the right side.

The rear out of the 250 is the more common D70 2U, and the DRW version is the same...but different because of the gear ratio and being wider.

Clear as mud?

I'll look for the bumps tonight. I was going from the tags on the left of the diff cover and the fact that both trucks had the 727 3 speed auto trans. It is my understanding that that means 3:07 rear end.

Vast majority of the time, that's the case.

I did get to Florida and back. Had to hide out in Tennessee for two days waiting for the hurricane to go by. I'm trying to find a D61 front end no luck yet. I should be able to look at the classified now on this sight. Have a whole bunch of stuff to sell and to buy.

Re-use all the stuff from that SRW, the only thing that is different is the brake rotors and hubs. Spindles, shafts, brake caliper supports, etc., are all the same. You could leave it a SRW up front until you locate some DRW hubs...

Will the front brake rotors and hubs work from my 2 wheel drive one ton? What does SRW and DRW stand for? Is there a list of abbreviations commonly used on this sight?
