front brake upgrade on my 80 D150

Postby addes426 » Mon Dec 05, 2016 6:03 pm

I have the itch to do an oil burner in this truck rather than the BB/727 I had planned. As I'm chasing rabbits, the question of front brakes being upgraded for the extra weight, crosses my mind. I'm betting some of you have been there done that. I'd prefer to keep my 5x4.5 BC if I can. I also prefer to adapt something Mopar as to just buying a kit, if there is one, which I haven't found. Any tip would be appreciated.

Dazedandconfused on here runs a half ton with stock brakes on the front....I believe. I run a c10 with factory Chevy brakes,no issues yet,two years on the same binders.

I've read where others have left the stock brakes. It's not like I plan to race it on a road coarse or anything like that, though I would like to use it to tow. I guess I can get it done then think about upgrades. I just don't want to rebuild the brakes just to find they're inadequate. I hate doing things twice. I'd much rather work out as many problems in the planning stages as I can. Same as everybody else.

Oh....I understand completely. The brake system is the most important thing when it comes to our rides. Doing things two and three times just sucks to begin with.......brakes isn't something to skimp on. In this case tho.....I believe they've enough force to do what needs to be done.

Going by the numbers at the parts store, it appears they used the same front brake pads and calipers on everything up through '93. Someone somewhere on another forum mentioned the factory used a pad with more surface area on the 350 series trucks but the pictures they had posted as proof were lost to technology changes and I'd guess everything at the parts stores today is the "small" pads.

I worked in a Body shop for our local Chrysler dealer in 78 after I graduated HS. I loved that era of Dodge trucks. I know that a lot of parts were interchangeable between D100-D300. It saved money to make one part and back then, lite duty was still pretty tuff. Mopar stuff, for the most part, is pretty heavy built.

Yeah I run a Cummins 518 in my 83 D150. It's running stock brakes on the front and stock drums on a Ford 9". I want to change to disc on the rear but that's about it. I tow with mine and always run trailer brakes and have no issues.
